Hackers use 'sim swapping' method to gain access to victims' phone numbers

A method called sim swapping is becoming more common, and it's reportedly how hackers gained access to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey's account. Sim swapping allows hackers to switch a phone number to a device in their control. The criminals can gain access to the numbers in a few different ways, from calling customer service of a phone carrier, or bribing phone company employees to do the switches. At that point, it's as easy as requesting an access code to be sent via text from Twitter, Google, Facebook or any other sites that use two-factor authentication.
