Dear Moneyist, My wife and I are in our mid 30s and have been blessed enough to be relatively debt-free and purchase our first home together. Should we use that $200,000 to recast our mortgage — reduce the outstanding sum without altering the original terms — or invest the money? Our interest rate is low at 3.5%. We were able to make a 20% down payment, but our remaining balance is still over $1 million. I decided to sell the town house I purchased years ago, and was able to come up with an additional $400,000. We decided to pay off all of our remaining debt — $25,000 for a car and $15,000 for a student loan — make some home improvements to our bathroom and install solar electricity. We also
Dear Moneyist, My husband is 16 years older than me and, two years after our marriage, I discovered that he was five years older than his official age. At the same time, we found out I was pregnant with our first child. He explained that there was some controversy about his date of birth as he was born at home in the Philippines. There was a fire and he lost his parents at a very young age. I found it hard to believe at that time, but we have a good relationship and — other than that — things were okay. Moreover, we were expecting our first child, so I let it go. I have very little financial education and have always trusted him to handle our finances while I worked hard. We have three kids together,

With months left to go in the 2018 flu season, the U.S. has already hit an unfortunate benchmark, as shown on the flu map below: For the first time in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 13 years of influenza monitoring, every state in the continental U.S. is seeing “widespread” virus activity. The U.S. is experiencing such an active flu season that the CDC held a special briefing on the topic last week, explaining that there’s an uptick in both confirmed cases of the disease and hospitalizations related to it this year. Spread of the disease was bolstered by the circulation of H3N2, an influenza strain that’s particularly aggressive and was only successfully targeted by vaccines in about 30% of cases, according to the CDC.
Luther sold its youth football field to Walmart about three years ago so that the company could build one of its Express stores, using the money from the sale and the new tax revenue to pay off the roughly $200,000 in debt that resulted from an embezzlement scandal involving the former town treasurer. The store opened in May 2015 and closed only eight months later when Walmart pulled the plug on its Express experiment, shuttering all 102 of the smaller stores it had opened in mostly Southern and Midwestern towns to compete with dollar stores. Although many locations were taken over by Dollar General, the tax collections just don't measure up even though the Dollar General stores offer many of the same products, but not a pharmacy.

Apple Inc. announced a series of plans Wednesday that were celebrated as promises to hire thousands of workers and bring home all of its overseas cash. Well, not necessarily. Apple AAPL, -0.45% said in its release that the company planned to “create over 20,000 new jobs through hiring at existing campuses and opening a new one.” The key word there is “create,” which Apple really likes to use when discussing jobs: The company even has a portion of its website dedicated to “job creation” that claims it is “responsible for 2 million jobs” in the United States, most of which are jobs “attributable to the App Store ecosystem.” Apple currently employs 84,000 people in the U.S., it said Wednesday,
Longstanding royal protocol contends that members of Britain’s most hallowed family don’t give out autographs. While greeting fans outside the historic Cardiff Castle in Wales this week, the personable Suits actress and Prince Harry’s fiancée spent plenty of time chatting with well wishers, receiving gifts, and even accepting a kiss on the hand from one gentleman. This is going to make everyone jealous,” lucky Clarke told PEOPLE.

"When you think of how to help our workforce thrive and find opportunities in the digital world, the first word that often comes to mind is 'code.' Nearly every digital-skills program over the past decade has focused on computer science, with a lot of emphasis on young students," says Pichai."But the focus on code has left a potentially bigger opportunity largely unexplored."Softer-skilled, mid-level jobs are being rapidly digitized and automated and training needs to stay nimble and be a constant through your career, Pichai says."In the past, people were educated, and learned job skills, and that was enough for a lifetime. Now, with technology changing rapidly and new job areas emerging and transforming constantly, that's no longer the case," says Pichai."We need to focus on making lightweight, continuous education widely available.
