Some organisations are still failing to take basic cybersecurity precautions by not applying critical patches and leaving themselves open to cyberattacks -- even when updates have been available for months. This poor approach to security and patch management is detailed in Fortinet's Threat Landscape Report for Q2 2017. It highlights network and device hygiene as one of the most neglected areas of cybersecurity today -- a failing that, if rectified, could go a long way to preventing future attacks. The researchers behind the report use the global spread of WannaCry ransomware, and the subsequent Petya outbreak a month later, to demonstrate the extent to which poor patching processes are commonplace.
Mega-retailer Target Corp. has severed ties with San Francisco food tech Hampton Creek, saying on Friday that it will no longer sell products made by the food startup, two months after pulling its wares from its shelves. Target stopped selling Hampton Creek products, which include its Just Mayo eggless mayonnaise, in June, after it received "serious food safety allegations" about them. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration then said it would not investigate the matter unless consumers fell ill and has “no safety concerns with Hampton Creek at this time.” Hampton Creek has long maintained its products are safe and in compliance with the FDA. Bloomberg reports that those developments were not enough
Bankrupt Texas utility Energy Future Holdings will abandon a deal to sell power transmission company Oncor to Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc for $9 billion and will accept a $9.45 billion bid for Oncor by Sempra Energy instead, people familiar with the matter said. The development represents a rare blow for Buffett, who avoids bidding wars for companies and had swooped in two months ago to buy Oncor after two previous attempts by Energy Future to sell it were blocked by Texas regulators.
Libya halted loadings from its biggest oil field in the latest disruption to the OPEC nation’s crude production and shipments. Force majeure was declared since Saturday on shipments from Sharara, made through the Zawiya export terminal, state-run National Oil Corp. Chairman Mustafa Sanalla said Monday by phone. Force majeure is a legal status protecting a party from liability if it can’t fulfill a contract for reasons beyond its control. Sharara has experienced several brief shutdowns caused by different groups this year. This time, the pipeline linking the port to Sharara was closed by a local armed group seeking that one of its members be released from Tripoli prison, Wessam Al-Messmari, an

LOBNYA, Russia (AP) — "Old, fat and ugly" is what Yevgeniya Magurina jokingly calls a group of flight attendants of Russia's flagship airline Aeroflot who she claims have been sidelined in an apparent drive to make the cabin crew younger and more physically attractive. A Moscow court is due to rule on Tuesday in Magurina's lawsuit against Aeroflot in which she maintains she was taken off the sought-after long-haul international flights because of her looks. The flight attendant's claim, which triggered a wave of support as well condemnation, has put the spotlight on how women in modern Russia are still often judged by their physical appearance.

With Monsanto Co's latest flagship weed killer, dicamba, banned in Arkansas and under review by U.S. regulators over concerns it can drift in the wind, farmers and weed scientists are also complaining that confusing directions on the label make the product hard to use safely. The herbicide can damage or even kill crops that have not been genetically engineered to resist it.

In the two months since Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) announced its jaw-dropping $13.7 billion deal to buy Whole Foods Market Inc. (WFM) , there's been plenty of speculation about what types of physical retailers besides grocery stores Amazon will target via bricks-and-mortar initiatives. Between what was announced today and last December's unveiling of the Amazon Go store concept, it's safe to say that convenience stores are high on Amazon's hit list. As with grocery stores, Amazon is taking aim at an industry that to a large degree has been immune to e-commerce's multi-decade onslaught. Amazon just unveiled Instant Pickup, a service that it promises will let Prime members pick up "hundreds of need-it-now items like food, cold drinks, personal care items, technology essentials and Amazon devices" within two minutes of ordering them via the Amazon app.
An Altice USA Inc. (ATUS) purchase of Charter Communications Inc. (CHTR) would create a broadband and pay-TV powerhouse, and satisfy Patrick Drahi's desire to expand his U.S. territories. Buying Charter would be prohibitively expensive for Altice, however. It would likely require John Malone, controls 25% of Charter through holdings in Liberty Broadband Corp. and other vehicles, to reduce his influence at the cable operator, which would be a challenge in itself. Snap Co-Founders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy Have Lost Billions Since the IPO Altice has a $22 billion market cap, compared to Charter's $100 billion. Following its merger with Time Warner Cable, Charter also has more than $60 billion
