Yahoo Finance’s On the Move panel discuss what to look for Apple's iphone event and Amazon’s 2020 Prime Day.

Video Transcript

ADAM SHAPIRO: We have the iPhone event tomorrow. Dan Howley, are you expecting to get blown out of the water by this, or are we going to learn a lot about 5G? What are you watching with Apple?

DAN HOWLEY: You know, I think for the last few years, everything that we've expected out of an Apple event has been leaked out ahead of time. Save one or two maybe surprises, I think what we're going to get tomorrow is certainly the new iPhones. We're expecting four new models. That'll be a first for Apple to roll out that many at once.

It's going to be the 12 Mini, the 12, the 12 Pro, and the 12 Pro Max. And the Mini is going to have, obviously, a smaller display than and the Max. And the other two are in the middle, the 12 and 12 Pro.

All four are expected to have 5G capabilities. And that's important because that's really what's being seen as the upgrade factor users are going to want. Now, they're also expected to get some upgraded cameras and a new design. But it really is that 5G capability.

The interesting thing, though, is that for the average consumer, 5G is not going to do a whole heck of a lot right away, right? There's not a lot of applications for the average person to take advantage of 5G right now. 4G LTE, I can stream my Netflix at 4k or 1080p. I can do things like download everything I want from Spotify in a matter of minutes. I can stream games, that's for sure.

So it's not necessarily something that you're going to get and say, wow, this is a whole new world of capabilities. But it's still important because as with 4G, when we got that, it didn't really do a whole heck of a lot outside of load webpages faster. But because of 4G, we got things like Uber, Grubhub, Seamless, Spotify, things along those lines, the capability to stream games.

So that's really what we're going to eventually start to see out of 5G, is those kind of huge changes to the technology segments. But we're not going to see that right out of the gate because, frankly, it's just not there yet. And not enough consumers have 5G devices. But the iPhone should change that.

ADAM SHAPIRO: I think we want to ask you, too, about Amazon, because we have Amazon Prime starting this evening at 12 o'clock on the west coast. It'll be 3:00 AM here on the east coast. What are you looking for there?

DAN HOWLEY: So Amazon, they're obviously going to have big sales on their own products. Part of what Amazon does and part of what Prime Day is, is outside of a chance for them to sell billions of dollars in goods, it's also a chance for them to lock you into their ecosystem for life.

So, that's why if you look, there's going to be huge sales on a number of Amazon's goods. We're talking about 60% off the Echo Dot. That's going to be down to $18.99. It's a really great device, but it does keep you locked in Amazon.

The Fire TV, smart edition TVs, those are going to be available at a discount. They're going to have smart TVs with that Fire TV edition starting at $79. That's incredible.

But outside of Amazon, there's going be sales on things like video games. The Nintendo Switch is going to have sales with 33% off on certain titles. You'll get the DJI Magic Drone. That will be 33% off.

We're looking at sales on things like Casper mattresses. Those will be 30% off. And those can be pretty pricey, you know, just throwing it out there as someone who was shopping for mattresses a little while ago.

Toys are going to be upwards of 30% to 40% off. And then fashion, obviously-- Levi's 40% off and Calvin Klein underwear, which I'm going to model for the next show, 35% off. So, there's going to be a lot of great deals here. I think what a lot of people should look for is those lightning deals. Those are going to be something that's hot.

And Amazon always loves to hit you with the deals that you missed so that it makes you want to stay on the site for longer to make sure you don't miss when the next ones come up. So, don't fall for that trap. If you see something or know something that you really wanted to get at a discount, it's available, go for it. Don't sit on Prime all day.

And don't forget, Walmart and Target are going to have sales as well to counteract the impact of Prime Day. So there's going to be savings all across the border. So if you have some money to throw around, now's not a bad time to do it.
