Movies: ‘Smile’ shines at box office as 'Bros' flops

Yahoo Finance Live anchors discuss box office debut numbers for horror movie 'Smile.'

Video Transcript

BRIAN SOZZI: All right. At the box office. Paramount's "Smile" shined bright last weekend, bringing in $22 million taking the lead by a wide margin. On the flip side, Universal's "Bros" disappointed a big loss for the comedy genre, which is not doing as well as it once did. "Bros" had a lot going for it being the first major studio LGBTQ romcom with high critic ratings but nobody showed up. I haven't seen any one of these. I guess, I'm part of the data.

JULIE HYMAN: I want to see "Bros" and I was rooting for "Bros," but I'm not going to go see it in a theater because I don't really watch romcoms in the theater. So I guess I'm not the only one but I'm kind of bummed on its behalf.

BRAD SMITH: Well, I wanted to say "Smile," but I'm also not going to go see it in the theater.

JULIE HYMAN: You were leaning back even just watching the trailer there. He was next to me like, Uh-oh, where's the jump scare?

BRAD SMITH: Shivers on my spine. Yeah. I get surprised when people just walk over to my desk on a daily basis. So I can imagine what I'd be like in a theater watching a horror movie. I can't do that in theaters.

BRIAN SOZZI: You going to see Pooh "Purge?" You going to see Pooh "Purge," right?

BRAD SMITH: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah-- "Blood and Honey?"

BRIAN SOZZI: Yeah. Yeah.

JULIE HYMAN: Oh, god.

BRIAN SOZZI: Man, I am so excited for that. That, I'll go see.

JULIE HYMAN: But it is really interesting. It is instructive as to like what kind of movies people are so willing to see in theaters.

BRIAN SOZZI: Oh, I'm seeing Pooh "Purge." I want to see angry Pooh. I'm all for it.

JULIE HYMAN: I'm definitely not seeing that.
