Police Struggle to Corral Protesters Near Government Buildings in Algiers

Students led demonstrations in Algiers on May 21, calling for the cancellation of a presidential election set for July 4 by Abdelkader Bensalah, Algeria’s interim president.

Bensalah took over for a planned 90 days after President Abdelaziz Bouteflika ended his 20-year reign amid countrywide protests. However, he is seen by protesters as too close to the former regime.
