Sean Spicer talks reason for resignation and why Trump still calls him

On Wednesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer stopped by to promote his new book, “The Briefing: Politics, The Press, And The President.” During the interview, Kimmel grilled Spicer over a number of topics including how Spicer’s mom has handled things, choosing truth over loyalty, and his resignation in July of last year.

Rumors swirled back then that he was butting heads with Donald Trump over the hiring of Anthony Scaramucci. But in fact, Spicer wrote his resignation letter in May, a couple months before actually handing it in. And as for Scaramucci, while Spicer admitted that working under him would not have been an acceptable situation, that is not the reason he resigned.I had become the story too often. And that's not a good place for a spokesperson to be,” Spicer said. “You're not supposed to be talking or defending yourself. You're supposed to be communicating on behalf of the person or the institution that you represent.”And as for why Spicer wrote his resignation letter when he did, he said he knew things weren’t getting any better.“I wanted to make sure that I was ready. Because at some point I knew that the end was coming,” Spicer said. “And it was coming sooner rather than later.”But even though Spicer is out of the White House, he’s not out of Trump’s rolodex. Spicer said the president calls him, “as much as he likes.” And the only time it was a little tense, Spicer admitted, was the first time Trump called him post-resignation. And it just happens that it was after Spicer did Kimmel’s show in September of last year.

When Kimmel asked if Trump was mad about the appearance, Spicer said no.“He said, ‘Great job on Jimmy Kimmel.’ I went, ‘whew.’”Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs weeknights at 11:35 on ABC.
