Stocks Close Mixed on Apple, Tesla Chooses Nevada for 'Gigafactory'

Major U.S. markets were not able to hold onto the day's gains and closed mixed Wednesday. Both the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial set new records earlier in the session. Apple (AAPL) pushed the Nasdaq lower. Auto sales in the U.S. for August were unexpectedly strong. Chrysler led the way with a 20 percent gain but Ford (F) sales were roughly flat and General Motors (GM) sales fell 1.2 percent. Electric car maker Telsa (TSLA) has chosen Nevada as the state to build its battery plant. According to reports, state officials will hold a press conference Thursday on what's being called a 'gigafactory'. Infinity Pharmaceuticals (INFI) was a big gainer in today's session. The company partnered with AbbVie (ABBV) to develop and market its experimental cancer drug. Loads of fresh economic data await investors Thursday including the ADP employment report for August, the weekly jobless claims and the monthly ISM non-manufacturing data.
