Stocks on the Move: Dollar Tree and Dollar General

Yahoo Finance's On the Move panel discuss today's Stocks on the Move the dollar stores; Dollar General and Dollar Tree on earnings.

Video Transcript

JULIE HYMAN: As we take you to break, I also want to tell you, I'm watching the dollar stores. Because Dollar General and Dollar Tree both came out with earnings. Dollar General shares are down less than 1% even though earnings per share beat estimates. Revenue rose 24.6%.

And like the Walmarts of the world, for example, stores that stayed open throughout the pandemic have fared better, particularly those that sell staples. Comparable sales at Dollar General up nearly 19%. The shares are down today, as I mentioned. The stock is up 28% year-to-date. So it could be a function of high expectations going into this report.

Likewise, Dollar Tree shares are down more, 5.6%. Their comps rose by a little more than 7%. Their gross margin widened by 1.8%, but might not have been quite as good as the Street was expecting.
