Teens prefer ‘Call of Duty’ to ‘Fortnite:’ survey

Yahoo Finance’s Kristin Myers and Dan Howley discuss Piper Sandler’s findings on teen video game use.

KRISTIN MYERS: Dan, I also want to ask you about a new survey from Piper Jaffray showing, this is something I know that's very much in your wheelhouse, "Call of Duty" overtaking "Fortnite." I haven't played either one of those games, but tell us more about that.

DAN HOWLEY: Yeah, I play "Call of Duty" way too much. It's basically the way I keep in touch with my friends, so maybe I'm just like every teen out there. I'm not, though. But yes, so according to this Piper Sandler study, basically what's going on is that "Call of Duty" has overtaken "Fortnite" among teens as far as popularity goes. And by that, I mean, it's like essentially crushing it. 62% of respondents have said that they play "Call of Duty." That's up from 33% in the spring.

Now, "Fortnite," which is made by Epic Games, which is locked in that legal battle with Apple, has seen those numbers drop, not too badly, but enough. They're not up there with "Call of Duty." They went from 39% in the spring to 37% now. Now, when you think about the context the pandemic though, those numbers are pretty bad when we've seen interactions with games just go through the roof as kids haven't been able to do anything throughout the summer. There's less to do as far as movies, team sports, things along those lines, so kids are now playing more games. So the fact that "Fortnite" fell off while "Call of Duty" exploded could be worrying for Epic Games.

"Call of duty," by the way, this is the free to play version called "War Zone," it came out March 10, so it really just hit at the right time. And Activision Blizzard has been pumping out updates for it non-stop, making it more and more interesting for gamers. So this is a big thing for Activision Blizzard, for myself. I just continue to play "Call of Duty" and will continue to do so going forward, regardless of what the teens think is cool.
