Yahoo Finance’s Dan Howley joins Yahoo Finance’s Seana Smith to break down how Tom Hanks’ upcoming World War II film is a big win for Apple's streaming service.

Video Transcript

SEANA SMITH: I want to turn to the latest in the streaming wars. Apple TV has won a bidding war for Tom Hanks's new movie "Greyhound." Now this is pretty interesting because the movie was originally scheduled to be released in theaters on Father's Day before the coronavirus pandemic shut down movie theaters.

We have Dan Howley on here to discuss more about this. And, Dan, I guess two questions here for you. One, how big of a win is this for Apple? And then two, it's interesting when you talk about Apple buying new content because then it raises the question about whether or not they're able to produce enough of their own stuff.

DAN HOWLEY: Yeah, this is a win for Apple for sure, but it does kind of go against what they originally said they were going to do with Apple TV+, which was rely specifically on their own IP.

Now this is a Sony Pictures movie. It was originally expected to roll out in theaters for Father's Day. Obviously that's not going to happen now because of COVID-19. So it was a way for Sony to kind of get their movie out there to a mass audience and for Apple to have content available at a time when they really are kind of running low on it.

When you think about the streaming wars, Apple TV+ unfortunately doesn't really ring as much bells or get as much attention as something like Netflix or even Amazon Video. This is a way for them to drive more attention to the service, and I think it should do well. It's Tom hanks. It's World War II. I think it's going to do incredibly well for them.
