Tsai Ing-wen says Taiwan faces ‘threat’ from Beijing ahead of presidential election

In a televised debate on December 29, 2019, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said the self-governing island is facing threats from the Chinese mainland. Beijing has considered Taiwan to be part of China after their split in a civil war. Tsai is running for a second term, competing against her main rival Han Kuo-yu from the Kuomintang and James Soong from the People First Party. The election will take place on January 11, 2020.
