Wal-Mart stock has not started 2014 with a bang -- shares are down about three percent so far this year, in part thanks to harsh winter weather keeping consumers indoors during crucial months. Now, with summer sales on the way and back-to-school shopping soon to follow, the Arkansas mega-retailer is looking to reverse its fortunes by taking on its competitors. This includes offering discounts on titles Amazon has stopped carrying, because of its ongoing beef with publisher Hachette, and plans to carry more organic goods to compete with Whole Foods, which has seen its stock struggle in 2014.
