New York Times 'Wordle' app to be adapted into a board game

Yahoo Finance's Seana Smith discusses reports that the New York Times will be creating a board game based on its hit mobile game 'Wordle.'

Video Transcript

SEANA SMITH: All right, well, Scrabble better watch out. Wordle, the word puzzle app that took the world by storm last fall, is being turned into a board game. Now, "The New York Times," who purchased the app shortly after it exploded in popularity, is partnering with Hasbro to bring the game to a table near you.

Now, Hasbro reportedly first approached "The Times" after its acquisition to produce Wordle, the party game, after noticing that players were posting their scores across social media each day. Pre-orders start today ahead of the game's release on October 1. And it will soon be sold at a Hasbro site, as well as Target, Walmart, and Amazon, for 19.99. Dave, I, for one, am very, very excited.

DAVE BRIGGS: You play every day?

SEANA SMITH: I don't play every day, no, but I play a lot. And I've also never posted my score to social media. I just wanted to clarify that.

DAVE BRIGGS: Good. Thank you.

SEANA SMITH: But I love it. It's fun. You need to give it a shot.

DAVE BRIGGS: I'm glad you don't post. No disrespect to those of you that do, but it's just-- I get it. It's enough already.

SEANA SMITH: It's braggy. Also, my scores are also never that good. So maybe that's why.

DAVE BRIGGS: I'm terrible at that game.

SEANA SMITH: If I got it in two tries, that would be different.

DAVE BRIGGS: I'm looking forward to the board game, though.
