Infonetics Survey Unveils Businesses' Plans for Mobile Security, Internet of Things, Wearables

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwired - March 16, 2015) - Technology market research firm Infonetics Research, now part of IHS Inc. (IHS), today released excerpts from its 2015 Mobile and IoT Security Strategies and Vendor Leadership: North American Enterprise Survey. The study details the plans of medium and large businesses for deploying security solutions for mobile devices and the Internet of Things (IoT), as well as their thoughts on leading security vendors.

"Though IT security departments wrestle with the emerging threat mobile devices represent, many are also beginning to gain an understanding of what the Internet of Things means for enterprise security. In many cases, mobile device security and security for the IoT go hand in hand, and many buyers are looking to purchase and deploy solutions simultaneously," said Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for security at Infonetics Research, now part of IHS Inc.

"Nearly three-quarters of the organizations participating in our mobile and IoT security study are building a comprehensive strategy for providing security for unmanaged or unmanageable IoT devices connected to their enterprise networks. They've clearly learned from the pain they experienced with bring your own device (BYOD) for mobile devices and are looking to beat the problem to the punch," Wilson said.

MOBILE AND IOT SECURITY SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Enterprise respondents' top drivers for deploying mobile and IoT security closely mirror the drivers for overall security deployments: theft prevention and accidental data leakage prevention

  • When asked about the types of IoT devices connected to their networks, respondent organizations indicated there are a wide range or device types already connected, with networked video cameras the clear leader

  • Wearables are currently very low on the list of connected devices, but by 2016 42 percent of respondents expect wearables will be connected to their networks

    • Extending security to wearables will be critical as the Microsoft Band, Apple iWatch and others already offer the capability to receive email, text messages and other forms of communication from connected smartphones
