China steps up trade battle over solar panels by boosting duties on US, SKorean polysilicon
BEIJING (AP) -- China has stepped up a global trade battle over solar panels by raising import duties on U.S. and Korean-made polysilicon used to manufacture them.
The Ministry of Commerce says importers will have to pay duties of 53.3 percent to 57 percent on U.S.-made solar-grade polysilion and 2.4 percent to 48.7 percent on polysilicon from South Korea. The ministry said that was in response to dumping, or selling at improperly low prices.
The United States and the European Union have imposed anti-dumping duties on Chinese-made solar panels to offset what they say is improper subsidies by Beijing to manufacturers.
China earlier retaliated against Europe by launching a trade investigation of wine that could lead to higher import duties.
