Lifespan cost-savings to include doc training cuts
Lifespan eliminating 122 positions in bid to save over $100M; physician training to be reduced
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- A plan by Rhode Island's largest health system to save between $100 million and $150 million over the next two and a half years through significant job cuts will also include cuts to its physician training program.
Lifespan says it is eliminating a total of 122 positions. Many are already vacant, but the number also includes layoffs. The health system will also reduce the number of residents it trains beginning in July 2014.
Lifespan hasn't yet identified which resident and fellowship positions will be cut. None of its current 590 residents will be affected.
CEO Timothy Babineau said in March Lifespan was facing a significant budget shortfall, in part because of declining reimbursements, and warned of cuts. He tells employees the system is working to identify "additional efficiencies and consolidations."
