New York Passes Bill Banning Selfies with Tigers

New York state legislators have passed a groundbreaking bill that seeks to stop people from posing for photos with tigers.
This digital epidemic came to light when the Tumblr page Tinder Guys With Tigers compiled the wildcat selfies posted to online dating forums like Tinder and OkCupid — presumably demonstrating both bravery and tenderness to potential mates.
The New York Post reports that Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal introduced the bill in order to make traveling circuses and county fairs safer places for the public to enjoy large predatory cats. However, stemming the tide of foolish selfies featuring dangerous animals is seen as a fortunate side benefit.

In a conversation with the Post, Rosenthal said, “They can still pose with bears and monkeys. They just have to take big cats off their list.”

This legislation was deemed necessary given that within 15 years there have been seven occurrences of tiger escapes and tiger-related injuries in New York State. There have been two instances of outright tiger maulings. Needless to say, even one tiger mauling in 15 years is too many.
The bill will levy a $500 fine against anyone caught having undue congress with a tiger.

If the bill is signed into law it will be hard to enforce, as it will be difficult to prove that photos with tigers are taken in New York State.
Some New Yorkers are up in arms about this legislation. Political website Capital New York complained, “Guess things are going so well in New York state that our elected representatives have time to pass frivolous legislations.”
