Our Debt Binge Is Ending — And The Middle Class Will Get Clobbered

The world is coming to the end of a 50-year debt supercycle, John Mauldin says, and the austerity required to put us back on solid financial footing will hammer ordinary Americans.

Mauldin, a financial analyst and the author of ENDGAME: The End Of The Debt Supercycle And How It Changes Everything, thinks that the the US will soon be forced to confront the fact that it has borrowed way too much in the past few decades and must severely cut back.

The US's $1.6 trillion-a-year deficit, Mauldin believes, must quickly be cut to about $300 billion a year, or the US will face a debt crisis. And given that our current government can barely find ways to chop $30 billion of spending from the 2011 budget, these cuts are going to be painful.

What will the forced austerity mean for ordinary Americans?

Higher taxes and significantly reduced Medicare and Medicaid spending, for starters, Mauldin says. And then cuts to almost everything else in the budget, including military spending and education.

In other words, as has so often been the case in the past couple of decades, the middle class will bear the brunt of the impact.

I said it in 1993 when Senator from Kentucky,” Mitch McConnell”, helped pass these Free Trade Agreements. The business cycle is dead and the only cycle is World Market Cycle, this new cycle makes all Countries into 3rd world countries. Just like, you see America turning into a poorer country. The Standard of Living has gone down for the last 20 years. We Americans are losing jobs, while corporation are getting richer. Now Congress is asking American to make sacrifices , we need to cut services, we need to make our taxes go up to pay our way of this deficit. Wall Street in rolling high again. Now who do you think has all this stock? These Trade Agreements was voted on once in 1963 or something like that. The Senators then, knew that this would destroy America's Standard of Living. Like now!! Taxes are being raised on everything. You mark my word, the business cycle is dead and so is the Standard of Americans Living, but let me tell you what's alive. Taxes! Yes your Taxes! We Americans will be tax more and more. See its true! I speak the truth. I say,: Tax the Imports and not me my Fellow American. "TAI" Tax All Imports" We use to Tax Imports, so don't say that I believe in being Protectionist. We can’t continue this Corporational path. Social Security is running out. I blame all the rich Senators and dishonest Business People that rip off the poor and uneducated people. I can name several Businesses that have left for cheaper wages, no insurance, no pensions, no OSHA, no Labor Boards, no EPA. Let's all remember that the reason for these trade agreements was, that we, as American's can buy things cheaper. Jeans, coats, shirts and cars. Everything else got higher, not cheaper. Is anyone buying things cheaper????? Oh yes another reason that trade agreements would be so good for us, is the jobs!!!!!!!! Jobs, Jobs, Jobs, #$%$!! Jobs that were going to be high paying computer jobs went to India. Yes, “ India.” Lets remember this “ that our Taxes go to the Our Government, so we can keep Our Military Strong“... Ask China? They are a lot better off in a Military aspect. China has purchase all kinds of new air arsenals, with American deficit money. We don't have an opportunity to get out of this if we don’t Tax Imports. John McCain thinks your rich if you only make $5,000,000,000.00 per year, which he is right because we will need that much to pay your taxes. I say,” that we should put into Law “TAI” Tax all Imports”. In stead of putting tariffs on us lets put them on China. McConnell loves putting Americans out of work too. McConnell and McCain loves these Free Trade Agreements, they are making all kinds of back room deals, putting money in their pockets. be ready for more Taxes and America to be wiped off her feet. Do you expect Corporations to get us out of this deficit? They will have all Americans become slaves. Put Tariffs back on Imports!!America will be able to stand on her own 2 feet, not borrowing money from other countries. Have you ever ask why China is not fighting in the Wars, we are in? Why are the Representatives giving “TARP money to China” China has created 200,000 manufacturing jobs with our tax money-TARP, we have created 300 jobs. I say lets take control and put tariffs on Foreign goods and put term limits on Congress.

Yep..., we need some global upheaval among countries to break up the global corps; then individual nations can fight it out to see who can be king of the hill for the next 50 years....

I'm sick and tired how both parties have played us against each other while they raid the treasury. If you truly love America and want it to survive we must put an end to this constant bickering and solve this problem. I've been a Democrat, a Republican and now an Independent. Unless "We the People" take our government back from these career politicians our end as a great nation is near.

We need to quit subsidizing ethanol and end this war of ten years and things will maybe turn around.
      • Byakuya 9 months ago
But it looks like the opposite is true.

You guys just started a 3rd war. Libya. You know somebody's gotta pay for those Tomahawks.

Maybe fire more teachers? So you can fire more Tomahawks? I'm guessing that is what's gonna happen.

The spending binge will continue, because that's what Congress does. The wealthy will get tax breaks as usual, because they contribute to campaigns. Do middle class people get jobs as ambassadors? Do the homeless get invited to state dinners? America is clearly the land of the privileged. Some call it opportunity.

Welcome to american plutocracy; goverment from the rich, by the rich, and for the rich

Get a job.....create your own wealth
      • Wayah 9 months ago
SOTW, I imagine most people who don't have jobs would like to do just that. There is not enough wealth to go around anymore, because the rich plutocrats and their families are hogging most of it.

It is time for the ordinary people, all of us, to change the way things are done. We may need an American Spring.

What we should have done a long time ago is stop spending so much money on things nobody ever needed in the first place. I'm talking the government and us private citizens. Does every teenager in the country REALLY need their own cell phone? Do BOTH dad and mom need their own cell phones? Does everybody need their own computer? Do we need three or four TV's in the same house? Do we really need to go to a walk in movie and pay $40 before we get out the door? That is only the tip of the iceburg. Waste. Waste. Waste. Yes, we went out there and earned. Yes, it's ours to do with as we wish. Of course it is. But, Good Lord, the money we waste. I hope the market doesn't crash. I hope our government doesn't fall, or more likely implode. I hope everything works out all right. But, I am worried, worried, worrid.

Time to cut back on spending. Save your money. Cut your expenses. Perhaps... share a home with your extended family... or with friends. Figure out a way to make more money.

Middle and lower class Americans are keenly aware of the class warfare being waged against us. That the tax breaks for the wealthiest few will survive this manufactured debt ceiling crisis proves beyond a doubt that we, the people, lack a leader to defend our interests.

Somehow I believed President Obama would be a strong leader for the middle class. Sadly, I was wrong. How can I vote for him again? There is no clearer sign of his failure to lead than by allowing the wealthiest few to blatantly and repeatedly attack the middle and lower classes consequence free. In conceding this fight, President Obama also conceded my vote and the votes of thousands like me.

This is a sad and terrible day for the United States of America. We, the people, feel leaderless today. We are more vulnerable with each passing day. More and more of us are being pushed to the brink. Cornered, harassed and desperate, we are also more dangerous because we have that much less to lose.

Memo to the rich: if you do not reign in the excesses of your own class there will be a terrible reckoning. The huge majority of Americans did not want this class war but it has been forced on us. We are not amused. We are not confused. We are angry and desperate. We are Americans and we will not be bullied forever!

Why is the middle class taking this clobbering?
    • Danny  •  9 months ago
Families already clobbered by this economy forcing families to make cuts to stay in their dwindling budgets so why cant congress do the same, end wars we dont need to be in -bring our military home, qiut trying to bail out other countries when OURS is in need.Strengthen our economy first by job creation by whatever needs to make that happen.Leave Social Security and Medicare alone other to insure that it is there for the peaple who have paid into it.Help the unemployed get educated by subsidizing apprentice jobs so people can learn while they earn to boost the economy.Tax companies hard if they take jobs out of country.NO simple solution just keep our jobs in America
    • Angry  •  9 months ago
For one, why don't we start eliminating all tax loopholes and tax breaks? Why should they be treated differently?

Why "our politicians" legislate to give their wealthy masters a break while they give us the thumbs down?
    • LARRY H  •  9 months ago
Once and for all lets put this myth to rest about corporations and there paying taxes. I do not care if you taxed them 100% they will not pay the tax . You,me the consumer will pay there taxes as we always have by higher prices of there goods. That my friends is simple economy 101.

If everyone used cash instead of credit...just imagine how that will hurt the banks! Pay your credit card bills every month and the banks will go crazy....BUT, you will have more saved, more to give your children, and peace of mind for yourself.
