Avago Launches New Micro-ITLA for Coherent Applications - Analyst Blog

Wireless chip manufacturer Avago Technologies Limited AVGO launched its new micro-integrated tunable laser assembly (Micro-ITLA) device, the AFCU-UITLAXX to the market. The device will accelerate the deployment of next-generation 100G and 200G/400G transmission systems.

The AFCU-UITLAXX leverages Avago’s external cavity laser technology and indium phosphide and silica-on-silicon chip technology and packaging platform. The micro-ITLA component is intended for use in both the transmission and local oscillator laser in coherent dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) systems.

The device delivers an impressively narrow linewidth, low phase noise and superior frequency accuracy, thus enhancing performance of the system by reducing signal to noise penalties. Also, the device has no moving parts and offers outstanding resistance to operational shock and vibration.

Compared to the industry standard large form factor ITLA, Avago's new Micro-ITLA device is only one-third the size and 25% less power consumption. The product will facilitate customer migration to smaller-size optical linecard solutions or pluggable transceivers for next generation 100G and 200G/400G transmission systems, and enable transceiver and linecard manufacturers to deliver high performing and more competent coherent DWDM solutions.

Avago is a dominant player in the high-speed optical interconnect market, and uses proprietary short-wave parallel optic and long-wave WDM technologies. The new launch demonstrates Avago's continued commitment to advancing coherent receiver technology in order to address the 100G metro and emerging 200G/400G long-haul network applications.

The Singapore-based company makes RF (radio frequency) chips that are used in the Apple Inc. AAPL iPhones as well as smartphones from Samsung and other mobile-device companies. The chipmaker faces stiff competition from Qualcomm QCOM, Qorvo QRVO, Marvell and Skyworks Solutions.

Avago presently sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
