BlackBerry’s secure solutions should find support from consumers

BlackBerry's taking all the right steps to grow its software business (Part 2 of 10)

(Continued from Part 1)

Apple was considered the most secure platform until the celebrity photo leak

In the previous part of this series, we discussed how increasing data breaches have affected a number of companies financially and how BlackBerry’s (BBRY) secure solutions could help these enterprises solve their security problems. Enterprises continue to adopt BlackBerry’s secure solutions, but the problem lies with consumers’ adoption of BlackBerry products.

Market Realist recently published an article titled BlackBerry has become a niche smartphone player , where we discussed how consumers have lost interest in BlackBerry’s products.

However, along with enterprises, consumers too have started to face security issues on their mobile devices. Last year, one of the events that garnered major hype was the celebrity photo leaks from Apple’s (AAPL) iCloud accounts. Before this event, Apple’s iOS operating system was considered the most secure player among smartphone operating systems.

According to a report from Symantec (SYMC) and as the chart below shows, 97% of all mobile threats happened on Google’s (GOOG)(GOOGL) Android devices in 2013. In contrast, Symbian, Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows Phone, and Apple’s iOS seemed to have negligible security issues.

BlackBerry has an opportunity now to showcase its security features

The celebrity photo leak brought to light the security loopholes on Apple devices. This offers an opportunity for BlackBerry to market itself as a secure player and thereby penetrate the consumer smartphone market. This is, again, a great opportunity for BlackBerry to increase its share in the global smartphone market. Currently, it has a minuscule share of 1%.
