She’s back. Nicole Lapin, author of the bestselling book “Rich Bitch” and host of “Hatched,” a reality TV show for budding entrepreneurs, is trying something new. “BOSS BITCH: A Simple 12-Step Plan to Take Charge of Your Career,” leaves behind the world personal finance to venture into career advice and even self-help.
Since her first book was a huge hit in the personal finance world, I asked her why she deviated for her latest work. “I think a lot of people want to explore [starting] their own business, but we don’t learn the stuff in school,” she says. “Why do we not learn how to do a business plan or do a budget or do or taxes. These are much more practical things.”
In her book, Lapin shares a few cautionary tales from her own career, and it turns out one of her biggest flubs lead to one of the best pieces of advice she’s ever received. While reporting from the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, she inadvertently used a double entendre (the story is told in hilarious fashion in the video above). When her boss told her it was a big no-no, she replied, “You’re the boss.”
That’s when her boss gave her some sage advice. ”This was the best lesson I ever had. [He said], ‘No you’re the boss, I’m not there with you every single day, I’m not going to hold your hand, I’m not going to pick your fancy verbs. You have to be the boss of you every day,’ and that’s when it sunk in that the boss mentality is portable—you can take that wherever you go.”
Now, after being one of the youngest correspondents ever at a stock exchange (18 years old), starting her own company (Nothing But Gold Productions), authoring two books, and hosting a TV show, Lapin can now truly make the case that she has embraced the boss mentality.
