Compass Minerals salt miners in Canada strike

Union workers at Compass Minerals Ontario salt mine on strike, forcing production cuts

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) -- Compass Minerals International Inc. said Monday that workers at a Canadian salt mine have gone on strike, forcing it to temporarily reduce production there.

The Overland Park, Kan.-based company, which also sells fertilizer, said the strike at the Goderich, Ontario, mine was called Monday morning by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union Local 16-O, which represents about 380 workers at the mine.

Compass said its deicing salt inventories are strong following the milder-than-usual winter, and it believes that mine management will be able to produce enough rock salt to meet the needs of its non-seasonal customers while negotiations continue.

Compass rose 1 cent to $72.69 in afternoon trading.
