Doug Whaley could be on his way out at GM of the Buffalo Bills

Having not made the playoffs since the turn of the 21st century, the Buffalo Bills have faced lots of heartache and many unqualified professionals in the front office. However, out of all of the players, coaches and front office workers, none have generated as much hate as current general manager Doug Whaley.

When Whaley initially took over as the general manager of the Bills, the man had plenty of power in terms of roster decisions and coaching moves. Heck, the man was the face behind the Rex Ryan hiring. Maintaining control over the roster, Whaley had plenty of chances to help turn this team around and finally get them to the playoffs.

Unfortunately, things have not panned out well for Whaley. Becoming general manager in 2013 — after just over three years as the assistant GM — Whaley looked almost instantly like someone that could help turn the team around. Despite a 6-10 effort during his first season at the helm, the Bills recovered in 2014, going an impressive 9-7.

However, once Doug Marrone opted out of his contract, the team seemed destined for supreme averageness. Going 8-8 in Rex Ryan’s first season at the helm, Buffalo still looked to be on the edge of making the playoff push all the fans wanted. In 2016 though, it all came apart as the defense consistently struggled and more questions got asked of starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor.

Seeing the team go 7-9 last season, Buffalo fired Rex Ryan but retained the much maligned Doug Whaley. That said, Whaley now looks like he could be shown the door in the near future. With the hiring of new head coach Sean McDermott, Buffalo ownership has also taken away choice over player personnel, giving this right to the head coach.

Heck, the team has even placed an almost gag order on Whaley as they keep him away from the press at all times. With his biggest job as general manager supposed to be decisions over player personnel, the loss of this task makes him almost redundant. With McDermott doing all of this, the team no longer needs or wants Doug Whaley.

Should McDermott flunk out in this department, it would not shock me if Whaley is the one that is fired. The Buffalo Bills need someone that can evaluate rosters and players. Doug Whaley is not that man.
