Four fire departments called to Lodi Metals after passing motorcyclist spots smoke
BELLVILLE — Four fire departments were called to Lodi Metals after a passing motorcyclist saw smoke pouring out of the building Saturday afternoon.
The fire was in the warehouse portion of the building at 1202 Mill Road, Bellville, said Zac Carlin, Belllville-Jefferson Township Fire Department chief.
"We're still trying to get the smoke out of the building," Carlin said shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday. "We're trying to figure out what the cause was. We originally got called for smoke coming out of the doors and vents. Right now, we're still trying to figure out what we're dealing with."
His department was assisted by firefighters from the Washington Township, Worthington Township and Mansfield City fire departments.
Adam Bowman, company director for Lodi Metals, said a passing motorcyclist spotted the smoke and reported the fire.
The motorcyclist, who did not wish to give his name, said he saw the smoke at around 3:45 p.m.
"All I know right now is the fire started in the back of the building and kind of moved its way down the back of the building," Bowman said at the scene. "And to be honest, that's all I really know right now."
He said he believed the fire was extinguished fairly quickly.
"The fire's all out right now; the sprinkler system took care of it," Bowman said. "As far as what started it, things like that, I don't have any idea yet."
The company, which makes cargo control products for tractor-trailers, was closed Friday and Saturday, he said.
