Globus Medical Adds RISE-L to Suite of Expandable Spacers - Analyst Blog

Globus Medical, Inc. GMED appears quite focused on expanding its portfolio of expandable spacers. On July 1, the musculoskeletal implant manufacturer announced the launch of RISE-L – a lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) device.

The product is especially designed for patients suffering from degenerative disc disease (DDD), a discogenic back pain associated with degeneration of the disc.

Globus Medical’s RISE-L, as a vertically expanding LLIF device, provides a large graft space in order to facilitate smooth infusion. Made of titanium, the implant is designed for up to 7mm of continuous in situ expansion and to provide restorative disc height with proper anatomical fit. The device will be available in various sizes in parallel or lordotic profiles.

The LLIF procedure is usually deemed superior to other approaches, as it allows for a larger implant footprint and has lesser impact on lower back muscles. This helps reduce the amount of blood loss and facilitates swift recovery in patients post-infusion.

Globus Medical has been scoring high on the innovation scoreboard, with respect to its LLIF product line. Starting with the PATRIOT TransContinental LLIF cage, which was launched over six years ago, the company has been instrumental in launching several advanced treatment options like CALIBER-L expandable cage, InterContinental plate-spacer, and PLYMOUTH lateral plate. These products are used in combination with Globus Medical’s MARS and MARS 3V retractors.

We feel Globus Medical’s extensive portfolio and the constant addition of newer technologies will help the company generate better top-line growth in the long run as well as offset lingering pricing pressure, which has been a key concern, of late. According to a research report by Millennium Research Group (MRG), the U.S. market for minimally invasive (MI) spine technologies is growing at a strong pace, and is expected to reach nearly $2 billion by 2017. In the current scenario, we believe Globus Medical is poised to gain better market traction going ahead, given its wide array of MI devices.
