Index, ETF option volumes near midday

Total option volume is at 5.6 million contracts so far today with activity again mixed in the indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (NYSEArca:SPY) is back in the top spot with 701,000 options traded, 446,000 of which are puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) is the top index in volume again today with 201,000 contracts, with calls outpacing puts by 3 to 1.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (NYSEArca:IWM) has seen 186,000 contracts trade, including 115,000 puts. Just behind are the S&P 500 Index (NasdaqGS:SPX) options with 184,000 and a put/call ratio of almost 3 to 1.

The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (NYSEArca:VXX) has 142,000 options changing hands, 93,000 of them puts. The SPDR Financial Fund (NYSEArca:XLF) has 132,000 options trading, with calls outnumbering puts by 3 to 1.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (NasdaqGM:QQQ) has 114,000 options moving. And the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (NYSEArca:EEM) also breaks the 100,000 mark and has a put/call ratio of almost 4 to 1.
