Index, ETF option volumes near midday

Total option volume tops 6.1 million contracts so far today, with the big indexes and ETFs leading the way, optionMONSTER's data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 618,000 contracts traded, 376,000 of which are puts. Next up are the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options with volume of 305,000 as calls outpace puts by 5 to 1. The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) follows with 248,000 options, including 140,000 puts.

The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) has 176,000 contracts changing hands, led by134,000 calls. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 125,000 options traded, with 91,000 puts.

The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has seen 90,000 contracts turn over, with slightly more puts than calls. And the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 89,000 options trading, including 52,000 calls.
