Martin Cooper, 'Father of the Cell Phone,' Joins Energous Board of Advisors

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwired - January 05, 2015) - Energous Corporation ("Energous" or "the Company") (WATT), the developer of WattUp™, a disruptive wire-free charging technology for electronic devices that provides power at a distance with complete mobility under full software control, today announced that Martin Cooper has joined its board of advisors. Cooper is known as the 'father of the cell phone' for his pioneering work in radio spectrum management -- and for making the first public handheld cellular phone call in history.

"Having Martin Cooper on the Energous board of advisors is perhaps the best validation yet for our WattUp wire-free charging technology," said Stephen R. Rizzone, CEO of Energous Corporation. "Cooper has more than vision for great technologies. He has the battle-tested experience to see those technologies to mass adoption."

Cooper is credited with having conceived the first mobile phone in the 1970s and for having led the team at Motorola that created it. Since then he has co-founded numerous communications companies with Arlene Harris, his wife and business partner. Among those was software firm Arraycomm, which specializes in antenna technologies for mobile phones and wireless Internet connectivity. Cooper grew Arraycomm from a startup to one of the world's leaders in smart antenna technology with over 400 patents issued or pending, worldwide. He is currently the co-founder and chairman of Dyna, LLC and advises both the FCC and the US Department of Commerce.

"WattUp is one of those rare breakthroughs that recognizes that the so-called 'battery' problem in wireless devices is solved with a charging solution that is transparent to the user. The cell phone with a dead battery can become a relic of the past," said Cooper. "The days of wired, mat-based and proximity charging are over. WattUp brings us closer to our vision for truly mobile communications."

About Energous Corporation
Energous Corporation is developing WattUp™, a wire-free charging technology that will transform the way people charge and power their electronic devices at home, in the office, in the car and beyond. WattUp is a revolutionary, patent- and trademark-pending solution that delivers intelligent, scalable power via the same radio bands as a Wi-Fi router. WattUp differs from current wireless charging systems in that it delivers meaningful, useable power, at a distance, allowing users to roam while charging. The result is a wire-free experience that saves users from having to remember to plug in their devices or place them on a mat. Energous will initially license WattUp to the wearable and mobile-accessory markets and will expand to other markets such as Wi-Fi routers and smartphones over time.
