Republic Services to Power Bay Area via 2 Landfill Projects

Republic Services, Inc. (RSG), the second largest domestic non-hazardous solid waste company in the U.S., announced that it will power the Bay Area Community with its latest Landfill Gas-To-Energy (:LGTE) projects.

The projects will involve its Forward and Vasco Road Landfills. Collectively, they will power over 5,100 area homes annually by generating 8.6 megawatts (“MW”) of energy for the local electric grid.

The project, which comes as a significant step in California’s efforts to generate clean, renewable energy, is an outcome of the joint effort by Republic Services, Ameresco, Inc., and multiple other agencies and local leaders.

Republic Services and Ameresco partnered on the design, progress and management of the new projects. The two companies have partnered on seven other projects across the U.S, generating over 65 MW of power.

Waste decomposition produces landfill gas as a natural byproduct. These projects extract gas from within each landfill and process it. The processed gas is then distributed to a generator where it is converted into energy that supplies to the local electric grid.

LGTE projects lessen energy dependence on non-renewable resources, like coal or petroleum. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (:EPA) estimates that 8.6 MW of energy generated from landfill gas corresponds to eliminating carbon emissions from 47.6 million gallons of gasoline consumed.

Republic Services operates 72 LGTE projects across the nation. These projects harness huge amounts of electricity and gas. Per the EPA, the landfill gas that is extracted and reused is equivalent to planting around 4.5 million acres of trees or removing over 4 million cars from the road.

Republic Services currently holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Other stocks in the business services sector that look promising and are worth a look include Avis Budget Group, Inc. (CAR), Green Dot Corporation (GDOT) and Gartner Inc. (IT), each carrying a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
