Southwest Airlines Adds Flights on Memphis-Texas Route
Southwest Airlines Co. LUV decided to launch two new non-stop seasonal flights from Memphis to Austin, Texas. Under the new extension, the carrier will operate flights only on Saturdays and Sundays starting Dec 5, 2015 through Jan 3, 2016. This also marks the inclusion of Austin as the seventh destination in the carrier’s network.
However, at the closing of the winter holiday season, the flight service will be available only on Saturdays from Jan 9 through Mar 5, 2016. Launch of non-stop flights during weekends will open up more options to passengers and will allow them to skip connecting flights, thereby helping them save travel time.
Notably, Southwest Airlines’ weekend flights will create significant competition for Allegiant Air as the latter also plans to initiate Thursday and Sunday non-stop flights on the Memphis-Austin route. Allegiant Air’s service is slated to begin from Oct 1 this year.
In keeping with its expansion efforts, Southwest Airlines recently announced plans of introducing non-stop flights to Orlando International as well, starting Dec 5, 2015. Even in April this year, the carrier flagged off two non-stop daily flights connecting Memphis and Dallas Love Field.
Hence, we believe that increased flight frequencies coupled with low fares will not only enhance travel options for travelers during busy travel periods but will also boost revenues for Southwest Airlines.
