The Thinking Woman's Front Row: how to shop London Fashion Week's smartest street style

Street style isn’t all about slavishly following trends; the women below tackled London Fashion Week in chic outfits that are true to their unique styles. Here are the best to emulate.

Polly Morgan: sculptor and artist

Polly stood out on the front row at the Roland Mouret show on Saturday in velvet platforms and pale pink Miu Miu trousers. To pull off this tricky colour, opt for trousers in a loosely tailored shape and pair with simple separates to ease you in. Morgan regularly wears pastels and slouchy shapes, offering a contrast to her glamorous accessories.

Aquazzura crepe trousers, £490, Matches Fashion; Funnel knit jumper, £36, Topshop; Chloe velvet pumps, £365, Net-a-Porter.

Frances Corner OBE: Head of London College of Fashion

'’I always plan ahead for my working week: sometimes I have things on in the evening, so I have to think about that. I always wear at least one item of Yohji Yamamoto. Mostly black, sometimes dark blue, bits of red, sometimes grey. Because of my job, I need to be quite distinctive, so I’ve adopted a bit of a look so that staff, students and industry people recognise me. The same is true of Fashion week’’.

Shannon 2 shoe, £490, Church's; Yohji Yamamoto  cropped palazzo pants, £581, Farfetch; Lacey blouse, £59, Monsoon; Numero 10, £119, Retro Super Future

Justine Simons OBE: Deputy mayor for culture and the creative industries

“What I wear completely depends on my mood and what I have in my diary, but generally I wear a pussybow blouse and a pencil skirt, or a dress. I mostly wear high street and a mix of vintage - it helps that I go travelling a lot so I’m always on the hunt. & Other Stories is my favourite - it has its own great aesthetic and doesn’t overtly follow trends. I’m always drawn to colour and craft so I love Erdem and Peter Pilotto.”

Wool coat, £145, & Other Stories; Printed dress, £19.99, H&M; Lipstick Queen lipstick in rouge, £20, Cult Beauty

Yana Peel: CEO of Serpentine galleries

Peel is an avid print wearer: it’s worth noting that she always pairs her bold colours and striking prints with simple hair and makeup to avoid clashing. Here she wears her statement kilt with a black leather jacket and boots to ensure it’s the focus of her outfit.

Le Kilt tartan wool kilt, £395, Harvey Nichols; Ankle boots, £29.99, Zara; Nappa leather jacket in ink, £298, Jigsaw

Heather Gramston: Buying Managers at Selfridges

''I think a lot about fabric and comfort for work - I wear a lot of trousers. And silk shirting is key for me. I also wear a lot of black, so I like to create a point of difference with a silhouette instead. Whether that’s shrunken or exaggerated. Fashion week always feels like the perfect opportunity to wear those more special pieces, but it’s more about things I invest in and enjoy and keep, rather than following trends or adopting a look for one season''.

Mid rise straight jeans, £44.95, GAP; Pouch, £495, Loewe; Vareuse top, £695, Balenciaga; New Look patent boots, £34.99, ASOS

Barbara Grispini: Curator, London Show Rooms

''A shirt is my staple piece for work at the moment. I didn’t wear them for a long time, but in the last year they're all I want to wear, since designers are now doing them in a different way. They’re more oversized so they have more casual feel. I also like activewear you can wear during the day, because I often go to Yoga in the middle of the day, like I am today after shows.''

Oring choker, £8, Weekday; Wide leg leather trousers, £399, Me + Em; Blue ruffle sleeve shirt, £34, Next; Line stud, £35, Jigsaw

Zowie Broach: Head of Fashion at Royal College of Art

"On a day like today where I have fashion shows, meetings and assessments with my students, I always opt for comfort and black. These Adidas trainers were such a bargain at £15 - my secret shopping tip is to buy trainers from the children's section, I'm only a size UK 5 and it saves around £50! I wear Boudicca a lot, and sometimes go for a flash of colour, such as the turquoise on my laces and the yellow panels on the back of my trousers."

Chloe cashmere cardigan, £785, Net-a-Porter; Joseph tie-up t-shirt,  £125, Matches Fashion; Saint Laurent sunglasses, £235, Net-a-Porter; Stripe trousers, £25.99, Zara; Adidas gazelle trainers, £75, Schuh
