Turkey presses Egypt for release of Turkish journalist detained in Cairo mosque sweep

ISTANBUL (AP) -- Turkey is pressing the Egyptian government to release a Turkish journalist who was detained after police stormed a mosque in Cairo and swept up hundreds of supporters of the country's ousted president who had sought refuge there.

Turkish officials said Monday they hoped that Metin Turan, a correspondent with state-run TRT television and radio, would be released soon. TRT spokesman Servet Sayma says Turan was covering the standoff Saturday at the mosque when he was detained along with the protesters. Sayma said Egypt has held him for two days despite being presented with his press credentials.

The incident comes amid growing tensions between the two countries. Turkey has strongly criticized Egypt's military-backed government since the July 3 military overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi.
