Va.'s largest electric utility updates energy plan
Dominion Virginia Power submits energy roadmap that includes gas, solar, wind, nuclear
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Dominion Virginia Power has submitted an updated long-range energy plan to state regulators that proposes a heavy reliance on natural gas, but also includes large-scale solar power generation and wind power.
The 15-year road map was submitted Friday to the State Corporation Commission. In a break from past filings, it offers what the utility calls a basic plan strong on gas generation and a fuel diversity plan that includes nuclear power, offshore and onshore wind power and solar generation. The utility is a unit of Dominion Resources Inc.
The basic plan presents the most cost effective approach, while the diversity plan recognizes more stringent U.S. regulations to reduce greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.
The energy plan leaves the door open to a third nuclear reactor at North Anna power station, but does not commit to building it.
