There was a very nice kick-save by equity bulls on Thursday, as the bears looked emboldened early but failed despite Meta's meltdown and a tick up in rates. And then there was good EPS news after the close, with GOOGL soaring and MSFT popping.

Manufacturing industries that dominated the economy decades ago - textiles, televisions, even automobiles to a large degree - have moved overseas, where labor and materials costs are lower. Yet the U.S. economy, even during the pandemic and the current period of high inflation, has expanded to record levels. If U.S. corporations weren't innovating, creating new products (such as vaccines and AI) and services (such as Zoom calls) and moving into new markets, the domestic economy would not be growing, and capital would not be flooding into the country. The current high level of the U.S. dollar relative to currencies around the world attests to the confidence that global investors have in the durable and innovative U.S. economy.

We hate to use overly complicated technical terms to describe the recent price action, but the stock market is acting a little -- squirrely. Or nervous. Or fidgety. Who is going to put up the big money to take prices higher? Are investors still in profit-taking mode for the massive gainers but then rotating to other areas of the market? In the big picture, there hasn't been a negative technical mark on the current uptrend. But there certainly does seem to be some short-term indecision among market participants.

We are raising our long-term technical outlook to Bullish and most likely will raise the intermediate-term outlook to bullish if we ever get a pullback. With the benefit of hindsight, both timeframes should have been changed to bullish either in the middle of 2023 or late 2023. Yet for the most part, the daily commentary in parts of 2023 and 2024 conveyed bull-market action in market breadth, as well as breadth and price thrusts typically seen in early bull markets. Things got tricky in October 2023, when the S&P 500 broke many key averages as well as its bull-market trendline off the October 2022 lows. In addition, market breadth fell back to bear-market territory. At the same time, the entire yield curve was in a strong uptrend, hitting and exceeding 5%.

Stock indices dipped in October 2023, with the S&P 500 falling a sharp 10% off summer highs. Looking at 13F filings of big institutional portfolios, we see that the big guns were busy last quarter taking advantage of that dip. Citadel Advisors went on a buying spree, adding to its $100 billion portfolio across a range of sectors. As did D.E. Shaw, adding to its $67 billion portfolio. Vickers Stock Research, a subsidiary of Argus Research Group, analyzes insider trading and institutional stock ownership. Form 13-Fs, which institutions must file to report their holdings, are due 45 days after the end of calendar quarters and have come in for 4Q24. We review 13Fs of major activists to determine core holdings and new purchases. Activist investing is now less about generating a short-term return and more about achieving long-term returns through an active management/investor partnership. Based on data from Vickers, here are some recent new purchases and key holdings of activist investors, as well as other high-profile money managers.

While everyone in the investment world will be waiting (nervously or confidently) for Nvidia's quarterly numbers after the close on Wednesday, there certainly are other important Q4 EPS reports this week -- like those from WMT, HD, PANW, ADI, SNPS, VRSK, INTU, BKNG, MELI, EOG, BRK.B, among others. In addition to NVDA, stocks that are quite extended after large-to-massive moves since late October (about four months ago) include PANW, INTU, BKNG, MELI, and BRK.B. Betting on more near-term upside from these stocks, no matter what they report, is a tough technical game as they all have extreme 14-day and 14-week Relative Strength Index (RSI) readings in the high 70s to mid-80s. Needless to say, this should be another interesting week.

Stocks were mixed on Friday morning following the January jobs report. In January, nonfarm payroll employment rose 353,000 and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.7%. The jobs count is up from 216,000 in December and well ahead of the expected 185,000, and the belief had been that unemployment would inch up to 3.8%. The S&P 500 rose 0.9%, the Dow was nearly flat and the Nasdaq gained 1.5%. Crude oil traded just above $72 per barrel, while gold fell $17 to $2053 per ounce.

Tuesday was another day of all-time highs (ATHs) for the S&P 500 (SPX), Nasdaq 100 (QQQ), and S&P 100 (OEX). It was an interesting day for SPX sector leadership and industry strength, with Consumer Staples (XLP) rising 1.1% and Communication Services (XLC) gaining 1%. Within Staples, Nondurable Household Products popped 3.3%, led by Kimberly-Clark (KMB +2%), Church & Dwight (CHD +1.9%), and Clorox (CLX +1.4%). Personal Products rose 2.1%, led by Procter & Gamble (PG +4%). XLC was powered by Mobile Telecommunications, which surged 4.3%, and Fixed Line Telecom, which was powered by Verizon (VZ +6.7%), the largest gainer in the SPX. Yes, real household names led the market. How strange is that?

The U.S. Dollar Index (USD) started trading in January 1973 and, believe it or not, has not gone anywhere for the past five decades. After moving sideways until the beginning of 1981, the greenback spiked higher until early 1985, rising to $165 from $100. As quickly as it soared, it then came crashing down, tracing out a very narrow Christmas tree and ultimately bottoming in 1992 at $79. Since early 1986, the greenback has been trapped in a fairly wide range between $71, hit in 2008, and $120, reached in early 2002. Since a secondary low was hit in 2011, the USD has been in a fairly consistent but wide bullish channel. A major part of the USD is the euro (about 60%), so it's not surprising that since that currency began in 1999, it has been (very) negatively correlated with the greenback.

Investing in the Cloud is not for the faint of heart -- but we see upside. Alphabet lost a steep 10% in one day last week after investors expressed their disappointment over growth in its cloud business. That same day, Microsoft surged after reporting better-than-expected growth in its Azure OpenAI cloud service. The race is on, and some will win and some will lose along the way. But the potential pie is big. In the internet era, in which digital commerce complements or has supplanted physical commerce, the information technology needs of all enterprises have grown. The traditional on-premises approach has been rendered inefficient, given that a user's IT needs may fluctuate at any time. Into this void, the Cloud has arrived. In Cloud services models, an enterprise's IT needs can be matched and scaled in real time. Through the Cloud, enterprises consume only as much computing, storage, and networking bandwidth as they need. For a major event, this allows massive scaling of IT resources beyond the restraints of on-premises implementation. For periods in which operations are steady, the Cloud services model allows for a needs-only application. The leading providers of Cloud services tend to be large Technology and Communication Services companies that provide many goods and services distinct from or adjacent to their Cloud businesses. Growth has been impressive for this group. Collectively, participants in the Cloud eco-system grew revenue at a 19% compound annual growth rate from 2016 to 2022. Still, the line isn't straight up. While Cloud services grew at a 23% growth rate from 2020 to 2021, the average growth rate slowed to 15.3% for 2022. This slowdown in revenue growth reflected impediments to normal business activity from the supply-chain crisis, inflation, and rising interest rates. Even so, demand for Cloud services has held up relatively well, given that Cloud transition is a long-tailed process and that Cloud transformation has become an imperative. It was a technical breakdown for the major stock indices on Tuesday, as August and September are living up to their historical tendency for price weakness. Since its July 31 closing high, the S&P 500 is down almost 7%. Since July 18, the Nasdaq has dropped 9% and the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) is off 8%.

The growth prospects for the artificial intelligence (AI) universe are impressive, yet hard to determine. Argus has derived a model of the size and scope of the global AI industry, based on our coverage of the major publicly-traded players and most of the mid-tier players, along with our industry analysts' knowledge of private players. We estimate the global AI industry amounted to about $90-$100 billion in 2021, and expect it to grow at a 40% CAGR through 2030, when it is expected to reach $1.8 trillion in annual revenue. We expect annual growth to decelerate from the low- to mid-40% range in immediate years to the mid-30% range for years toward the end of the survey period. But determining a realistic estimate for the size of the industry is a challenge. Even for an industry that promises to redefine measuring tools, there is no measurable unit of AI output comparable to barrels of oil or tons of steel. As well, much of AI development occurs within labs and at universities, and the output is measured in tangible progress against objectives, not dollars or units of output. In the corporate world, nearly all the AI pure-play companies service micro-niches, have little measurable revenue, and are deeply unprofitable. For our list this week, we take a big picture view of three areas where AI applications are developing. In Big Tech, we believe much of the revenue and most of the profitability from AI is attributable to several giant U.S. and a few international companies that operate primarily in growth sectors such as Technology, Communication Services, and Consumer Discretionary. Next, we note that China is also a hub of AI development, with companies like Alibaba, Baidu, and Tencent (though Argus follows only Alibaba). Finally, Niche Tech has significant AI activity among companies pursuing advances in IoT, vehicle electrification, autonomous driving, automation and connectivity solutions for manufacturing, warehousing, construction, and other areas. The Nasdaq and the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) fell slightly under their 50-day averages late last week, which we don't consider a break of this key short-term support. The last time the indices were below their 50-day was in March. They have dipped 5% from closing highs on July 18 and also are slightly below trendline support off March lows.

The first-quarter earnings season has passed the halfway mark with 292 (or 58%) of S&P 500 companies having reported results through August 1. An impressive 81% of those companies exceeded earnings expectations, while the blended (actual and still to report) earnings decline is now projected at 5.9%, according to Refinitv. The Consumer Discretionary sector still leads with 36% earnings growth, while Energy is now by far the weakest sector, with a 48% profit decline. Our analysts are always on the lookout for companies that boost their outlooks during earnings season. Management's ability to "raise guidance" can often be a catalyst to market-beating returns in the quarters ahead. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. economy added 517,000 payroll jobs in January, up from 260,000 in December and well above the Reuters consensus forecast of 185,000. The official unemployment rate ticked down to 3.4% from 3.5% in December. The Dow rose 0.2%, the S&P fell 0.1%, and the Nasdaq rose 0.1%. Crude oil fell 1% to $75 per barrel, while gold dropped more than 2% to $1880 per ounce.

Stocks extended their Fed-driven rally on Thursday, led by strong gains in the Communication Services, Consumer Discretionary, and Technology sectors. Meta Platforms jumped 23%, despite disappointing 4Q earnings, as investors focused on the company's better-than-expected revenue, cost-cutting efforts, and new share buyback plan. On the employment front, first-time claims for state unemployment benefits fell by 3,000 to 183,000 for the week ended January 28, below the Reuters consensus forecast of 200,000. The data came ahead of the government's January employment report on Friday morning. The consensus estimate calls for 185,000 new payroll jobs, down from 223,000 in December, and an unemployment rate of 3.6%, up from 3.5% a month earlier. The Dow fell 0.11%, the S&P rose 1.47%, and the Nasdaq soared 3.25%. Crude oil traded near $76 per barrel, while gold fell $16 to $1927 per ounce.

Both the potential onset of recession (if the economy is not in one already) and the sharp move higher in interest rates have pulled the foundation out from under the equity market in 2022. Few sectors have been spared, with only the Energy industry in the green on a year-to-date basis. The broad retrenchment has dragged down small-caps, mid-caps, large-caps, and even the mega-caps that had previously pushed stocks to new heights as the economy recovered from the pandemic. Washed Out, Part 2. As the S&P 500, Nasdaq, and Nasdaq 100 test their June bear-market lows and teeter on another major breakdown, we are starting to see some signs that at least a short-term bounce is near. Can we still see a mighty capitulation that gives up another 10%? Absolutely. And that might be what is needed to end the carnage. Another possibility is that the market continues lower over the next few months, never capitulates, and simply takes its time to find new lows.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) got smashed on Wednesday, falling 5.5% to $82/barrel, the lowest level since January. Just six days ago, crude almost hit $98 on an intraday basis. The stock market certainly benefited from the decline in oil and gasoline (which was down 4%) and probably also the move lower in the U.S. Dollar Index. Gasoline futures are off over $1.00 from their June highs and are back to the top of the range they traded in before Russia invaded Ukraine.

Stocks rose again on Friday morning, led by gains in the Consumer Discretionary and Energy sectors, as investors looked past Thursday's weak GDP numbers. Apple rose nearly 3% and Amazon nearly 11% following strong earnings reports. Exxon and Chevron also rallied after posting record profits. The Dow rose 0.5%, the S&P 0.8%, and the Nasdaq 1.0%. Crude oil rose 4% to $100 per barrel, while gold traded near $1780 per ounce.

The selloff came a day after the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 75 basis points, the first such increase since 1994, and lowered its full-year U.S. GDP growth forecast. The report also showed a strong increase in December payrolls, which were revised up to 510,000 from the 199,000 reported last month. The official unemployment rate edged up to 4.0% from 3.9% in December. The Dow fell 0.3%, the S&P was flat, and the Nasdaq rose 0.8%. Crude oil jumped to nearly $93 per barrel, while gold traded near $1808 per ounce.

IoT (machine to machine or M2M) connections are expected to grow at a 30% CAGR. Security is a top need, as "denial of service" attacks are set to double by 2023. To handle the challenges of managing, storing, and securing data amid this explosive traffic growth, data centers will need to harness the power of artificial intelligence. AI enhances data center capabilities though the power of machine learning, inference, and deep learning, all in an application-accelerated environment. The AI data center also makes use of non-traditional and emerging technologies that provide more computing power than traditional CPU-based architectures. These include GPU Compute from NVidia and Tensor cores from Google/Alphabet. As of mid-year 2021, about 600 hyperscale data centers were in operation around the world, up from about 500 at year-end 2019 and double the number from five years ago. The bulk of data center construction is by hyperscale providers including AWS from Amazon.com, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud from Alphabet, as well as with Chinese companies including Baidu and Alibaba. Co-location companies are another major data center driver, including Equinix and Digital Realty Trust. International Business Machines is providing hybrid cloud services that bridge public and private clouds. Other data center suppliers include semiconductor companies Broadcom, Marvell Technology, Intel, and Advanced Micro Devices. Sustainable Impact Investing is gaining traction with the global investment community. In January 2020, BlackRock CEO Lawrence Fink, who oversees approximately $9 trillion in assets, announced that his firm would be investing in companies that are making progress on sustainability. He doubled down in his January 2021 letter, calling on company managements to disclose their plans for making their businesses "compatible with a net-zero economy" by 2050. As assets have flowed in over the past 40 years, Sustainable Impact Investing has evolved. The discipline, originally known as Socially Responsible Investing, focused at first on excluding companies that conducted business in South Africa, or participated in industries such as tobacco, alcohol, and firearms. But the performance of these initial strategies lagged, and the approach has been modified. Now, instead of merely identifying industries to avoid, the discipline promotes "sustainable" business practices across all industries that can have an "impact" on global issues such as the climate, hunger, poverty, disease, shelter, and workers' rights.

Stocks rose strongly on Thursday as investors weighed new GDP and employment data along with 3Q earnings reports from a range of major companies. The Commerce Department said that 3Q GDP rose just 2.0%, down from 6.7% in 2Q and below the Reuters consensus of 2.7%. First-time unemployment claims fell to a new pandemic-era low of 281,000, down from 291,000 a week earlier and below the consensus forecast of 288,000. Continuing claims dropped to 2.243 million from 2.480 million a week earlier, and were also below consensus. The Dow rose 0.68%, the S&P 0.98%, and the Nasdaq 1.39%. Crude oil rose to $83 per barrel, while gold rose slightly to $1800 per ounce.

The United States economy is full of innovation. It has to be. Manufacturing industries that dominated the economy decades ago - textiles, televisions, even automobiles to a large degree - have moved overseas, where costs are lower. Yet the U.S. economy, even during the pandemic, has expanded to record levels. If U.S. corporations weren't innovating, the domestic economy would not be growing and capital would not be flooding into the country. Consider that U.S. GDP was approximately $1 trillion in 1930 but nearly $23 trillion at the end of 1H21. That's growth of 23-times. Meanwhile, the U.S. population has grown less than three-times during that time span, to 320 million from 120 million. The delta between GDP growth and population growth has been driven, in large part, by innovation. In addition, the value of listed corporations on U.S. stock exchanges at the end of 2020 was approximately $41 trillion, according to SIFMA, representing 38% of global equity market capitalization, while U.S. GDP represented only 26% of global GDP. The current low level of interest rates and the relatively high level of the dollar both attest to the confidence that global investors have in the innovative U.S. economy.
