Stocks pulled back on Friday morning as investors digested inflation data released this week and ahead of the Fed's policy decision next week. The Labor Department reported that U.S. import prices rose 0.3% in February, matching expectations and down from a 0.8% increase in January. Export prices rose 0.8% after advancing 0.9% in January. Prices for fuel imports advanced 1.8%, while nonfuel imports rose 0.2%. Meanwhile, manufacturing continued to decline. The Empire State Manufacturing Index fell to -20.9 in March from -2.4 in February and below expectations. New orders declined significantly, and employment and hours worked also fell. Input prices softened moderately, while output prices held steady. The University of Michigan consumer sentiment for the first weeks of March edged down to 76.5 from 76.9 in February. The S&P 500 fell 0.6%, the Dow was down 0.4% and the Nasdaq lost 0.9%. Crude oil traded just above $81 per barrel and gold was down $2 to $2165 per ounce.

This weekend, in Vegas, it's the Chiefs versus the 49ers. Usher is the halftime show; Tom Brady appears in a commercial; and Taylor Swift fans add a whole new demographic to the fan base. But aside from all that, there is big money at stake. For our list this week, we present possible ways to invest in the Super Bowl.

Monday Tee Up: Jobs Friday

Over the next decade, healthcare may be a place to both invest money and find a job. New employment projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) point to shifts in the population and the labor market. The U.S. economy is projected to add nearly 4.7 million jobs by 2032. Healthcare and social assistance is projected to be the fastest-growing sector, adding 2.1 million of those jobs, or 45% of the total. The prospective employment shift is being driven by both the aging population and the need to treat a higher prevalence of chronic conditions, including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. The projected pace of 0.3% total employment growth from 2022 to 2032 is slower than 1.2% annual growth from the 2012-2022 decade. Employment growth is driven by growth in the labor force, which is likely to ease to a 0.4% annual rate in the 2022-2032 decade, compared with 0.6% in the 2012-2022 decade, constrained by slower projected population growth. The fastest population growth is projected to come from individuals 75 and older. Baby Boomers are getting older and likely working longer, but older groups still have lower labor-force participation rates than those aged 25-54. The BLS expects real GDP to grow about 1.9% over the 2022-2032 period -- which is similar to the decades that ended in 2022 and 2012, but considerably slower than in the 1980s and 1990s (when population and labor force growth were faster). Job seekers should be aware that pay varies widely even in high-growth sectors. Home health care aides currently earn about $30,000 a year, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook from the BLS, while nurse practitioners earn $122,000. Doctors occupy 18 of the 20 highest-paying occupations. Nurse anesthetists, who require a master's degree but not an MD, rank impressively at number 20, with median pay of $203,000.

Monday Tee Up: Jackson Hole

One way to take a deeper dive on market breadth is to look at the percentage of stocks in each of the 11 S&P 500 sectors that are over their 200-day averages. We do this a lot with the major indices -- but have not drilled down to the sector level in a while. Of course (and speaking generally), if a sector is doing well and outperforming, one can expect that most stocks in the sector are over their 200-day.

Dividend income is often overlooked amid gyrations in the stock market. Thus far in 2023, market bulls are boasting about first-half S&P 500 returns that may top 15%. No one is very focused on the broad market index's 1.6% current yield. But dividends are an important element of return. Dividend income accounted for 42% of the total return of the S&P 500 between 1930 and 2012, according to Hartford Funds. And that's just the average. In some of those decades, dividends accounted for more than 50% of total returns and even 100% of returns. More recently, dividends have accounted for a smaller portion of returns, at around 15%-20%. In 2018, dividend payments softened the blow when most market indices declined as the Fed hiked rates. The pattern was repeated in 2022. Not all dividends are created equal, though, and it is important to understand the difference between the two main categories: high-yield stocks and dividend-growth stocks.

As of the session's end on Tuesday, the S&P 500 (SPX) was up 19.8% on a closing basis from its low on October 12, 2022. Rounding up just a bit, the SPX has officially entered a new bull market. The Nasdaq has popped 30% from its closing low on December 28, 2022, while the Nasdaq 100 has soared 37% from its close on November 3, 2022.

Some predicted 2023 would be a good year for commodities -- but, so far, that has not been the case. We did have some nice moves in precious metals from early March until early May, including silver (SLV), gold (GLD), and platinum (PPLT), but recent strength is waning -- with SLV already breaking down. Year-to-date, GLD is leading with a 9% gain, while PPLT and SLV are flat and the industrial metal Copper is up 4%. The big loser, Palladium (PALL), is down 17%.

We don't often see stock-market polls from fellow technicians, but invitees at an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Chartered Market Technicians Association in NYC were asked to forecast how the S&P 500 (SPX) would end the year. With the index drifting sideways for the past year, it's not surprising that a majority (55%) expected the index to remain range bound between 3,750 and 4,250 -- which is where we have been for most months going back to 2022. This is one of the basic tenets of technical analysis: the trend is your friend, until it isn't. It also is known as recency bias: what recently happened is expected to continue, as it is the freshest in the mind of most investors. The poll did tilt toward the bullish side, with 31% looking for a move on the SPX to above 4,500, while 11% were bearish.

Back on April 12, we wrote about the Commitments of Traders (COT) report, which looks at the positioning of three groups of traders in a couple dozen futures markets. Commercial hedgers, also called the smart money, are very good at loading the boat before a downtrend is over and cutting their positions drastically during the ensuing uptrend. Large speculators are mostly hedge funds that pile into a momentum trade, but generally stay too long at the party, and vice versa. Small speculators trade the fewest contracts and it's best to fade them.

As expected, the Federal Reserve hiked the fed funds rate by 25 basis points (bps) to a target range of 4.75% to 5%. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, expectations are dead even for either no hike at the next meeting in May or a 25-bps hike. How things have changed because of a "little" scare in the banking system. Looking out to the end of 2023, the market is now looking for at two, if not three, 25-bps cuts.

Well, the Valentine's Day massacre came two days late. Yes, we are exaggerating -- but some recent and some former market leaders (with certain stocks on both lists) did have an ugly Thursday. The PPI report came in hotter than expected and knocked stocks lower, but the market seemingly settled down. But investors then considered that St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard and Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester wanted the Fed to raise the funds rate by 50 basis points at the FOMC meeting earlier this month. We have heard this many times from Bullard, and it seemed like the market was finally getting tone death to his proclamations. Neither Bullard nor Mester are voting members of the FOMC.

If one were to believe that the NYSE Composite represented "the" stock market (such as we look at the S&P 500 (SPX)), there seemingly would be a better than 50/50 chance that the market was completing its bear-market bottom (bullish reversal) and entering a new bull market.

The index is back below (slightly) its 50-month average, which has acted as support at every key low (2010, 2011 2016, 2018, and 2020) since the secular bull market started in 2009. The Nasdaq is sitting on its lower trendline of its bullish channel going back to 2010/2011. Looking at the weekly chart, the index looks like it is tracing out a bearish wedge, which is a continuous pattern based on the current trend.

With the latest pullback in stocks, the improved breadth indicators that developed during the rally in the back half of March have experienced some erosion. As we have been saying, breadth remains an intermediate- to longer-term concern for the market. In the S&P 500, 52% of stocks are above their 50-day average (all breadth data as of 4/18 close) from a recent high of 76%. Some 48% are above their 200-day, down from a recent peak of 61%. Generally, large market declines happen when this measure falls and stays below 45%.

Several developments are needed in order to confirm a market bottom after an intermediate-term correction, a mini bear market, or a longer-term bear market. In the simplest form, when price continues to make lower closes (not day after day) following counter-trend rallies, we like to see bullish divergences in momentum and breadth. This shows that price is weaker, but momentum and breadth are actually improving. Following these positive divergences, we then must get momentum and breadth to go from weak (oversold) to strong (overbought) to get confirmation of a bottom.

So much for a peak in West Texas Intermediate (WTI) and so much for psychological resistance at $100/barrel. Crude surged over 9% on Tuesday, closing near $105 and hitting an intraday high of almost $107 after Monday's 4.5% jump. Gasoline futures closed over $3/gallon, with much of the oil complex at their highest levels since 2014. Do you think the federal government has ever thought of a flexible gasoline tax to smooth things out for consumers?

Stocks fell sharply on Thursday morning on continued Ukraine tensions, as the U.S. and NATO disputed claims by Russia that it was withdrawing its troops from positions near the Ukrainian border. Investors also weighed higher-than-expected weekly unemployment claims and lower-than-expected housing starts. On the earnings front, Walmart shares rose after the retailer posted strong fiscal 4Q22 results and raised its FY23 EPS guidance. The Dow fell 1.2%, the S&P 1.3%, and the Nasdaq 1.6%. Crude oil fell 3% to $91 per barrel, while gold jumped $27 to $1898 per ounce.

The stock market served up another odd statistical day on Thursday, similar to action we talked about at least a few times in 2021. It was mostly another risk-off day, with Technology (XLK) falling 2.7%, Consumer Discretionary (XLY) off 2%, Healthcare (XLV) down 1.7%, Communications Services (XLC) losing 1.2%, and Materials dipping 0.9%. The leaders for the day were mostly defensive, with Utilities gaining 0.5%, and Industrials (XLI) and Consumer Staples (XLP) rising slightly.

A few days ago, we noted that market breadth has improved since early December. Yesterday, we talked about the December strength in sectors that were at the bottom of the heap for 2021. We are seeing that carry through into 2022. Yes, it is only two days into the year, and it may mean nothing, but the powerful forces of market rotation that began last year may continue this year. When a sector/industry works for so long, and investment is heavy in the area, market participants sometimes miss the forest for the trees, at least for a while.

Crude oil (WTI) finally corrected, with things getting ugly after Thanksgiving. After peaking on an intraday basis on October 25 just above $85/barrel, WTI plunged to a recent low of $62.40 on Dec. 2. That was a 27% wipeout using intraday data. The entire rally off the August lows was obliterated in less than a month.

After backing off from euphoric levels in late September/early October, sentiment, is quickly heating up again. As we said a week ago, this is not one bit surprising as the S&P 500 has moved rapidly to all-time highs along with the Dow Industrials, the NYSE Composite, and the S&P MidCap 400.

Market breadth for indices and sectors remains mixed. The percentage of stocks in the S&P 500 above their 50-day average has improved to 68% from 37% in mid-July. It would certainly be positive if this percentage continues to improve. The percentage above their 200-day average has risen to 87% from a recent 83%. That is a very strong reading.

The 10-year Treasury yield broke lower in early July and fell to 1.15% on Tuesday, close to hitting the most-recent low of 1.13% from July 20. The recent lows represent a 50% retracement (1.13%) of the move from August until March. The next key Fibonacci giveback of 61.8% comes in near 1%, where there is also decent resistance.

Consumers are now more willing to spend on lifestyle enhancements along with necessary spending on life-saving treatments. In addition, the survival of the Affordable Care Act has kept the ranks of insured U.S. citizens above the historical average, further increasing consumer spending on healthcare services and products. Meanwhile, companies with experience in diagnostic testing, vaccines, and antiviral medicines, as well as suppliers of protective equipment and other hospital products, should benefit from efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic. The sector accounts for 13.0% of the S&P 500, and includes companies in the pharmaceuticals, medical devices, healthcare services, and insurance industries. The sector is underperforming the market thus far in 2021, with a gain of 12.9%. We think the sector should account for 15-17% of diversified portfolios. Here is how we use our analysts' Financial Services sector ideas in our Focus List and Model Portfolios. All stocks are rated BUY at Argus.

The stock market was flat to down last week as positive earnings surprises proved to be baked-in. Tech stocks modestly underperformed blue chips. During Friday's session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 149 points, or 0.42%. The S&P 500 was down 0.54%, and the Nasdaq Composite was down 0.71%. For the week, the DJIA was down 126 points, or 0.36%, the S&P 500 was down 0.37%, and the Nasdaq Composite was down 1.11%. Year-to-date, the DJIA is up 14.14%, the S&P 500 is up 17.02%, and the Nasdaq Composite is up 13.85%.

Pricing pressures are hot, primarily at the producer level. Further, after months of below-target inflation readings, mainstream measures of inflation are ticking higher as well, compared to the deflationary lows of the pandemic. Still, we don't think the Federal Reserve is planning to change its approach to low interest rates, and Chairman Powell has said that the central bank is willing to let inflation rise above its 2% target in exchange for a continued decline in unemployment. We track 17 inflation measures on a monthly basis. On average, they indicate that prices are rising at an 8.2% rate, ahead of last month's 7.9%. But drilling down to core inflation -- which we obtain by averaging Core CPI, core GDP PCE, market-based PCE Ex-Food & Energy, the five-year forward inflation expectation rate, and the 10-year TIPs Break-even Interest Rate -- our reading is 3.0%, with the all-important five-year target rate at 2.1%. The big increases in recent months have come at the producer level, as the PPI for Intermediate Unprocessed goods, for example, is now 54%, and the PPI for Intermediate Processed Goods is 23%. Much of this activity is driven by the recovery in commodity prices, including oil (which has more than tripled year-over year). The Fed's inflation forecasts call for a core inflation reading of 3.4% in 2021 and 2.1% in 2022.

The 10-year Treasury yield, which has been flat to a bit lower since late March, broke lower on Tuesday. Yields fell as low as 1.35% and finished near 1.37%, the lowest since February 23. Yields had run up to the 1.76% level, but have very slowly been dribbling lower to the surprise of many. Aren't we seeing rampant inflation in many areas of the economy? It seems the bond market views most of that as just temporary, driven by supply issues due to the pandemic.

We often talk about breadth, which is a summation of how the individual components of a major index are performing. This includes advance/decline lines, the percentage of stocks in an index above a certain moving average, the percentage of stocks in an index that are making new 52-week highs or lows, and the percentages of index stocks that are on point-and-figure (P&F) buy signals (known as the Bullish Percent Index, or BPI). Most of these indicators are bullish and have been bullish, which give us confidence that the bull market has room to run. Bearish breadth divergences are common at major intermediate- to long-term market tops -- and right now, we just don't see any.

The big increases in recent months have come at the producer level, as the PPI for Intermediate Unprocessed goods, for example, is now 58% and the PPI for Intermediate Processed Goods is 13%. Much of this price activity is driven by the recent recovery in commodity prices, including oil. Used car prices are also up. The Federal Reserve's inflation forecasts call for a core inflation reading of 2.2% in 2021 and back to 2.0% in 2022.

Stocks rose on Friday morning, led by the Technology sector, as a disappointing April jobs report diminished concerns that the Fed would cut back on bond purchases. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell sharply to about 1.55% following the report. The Labor Department said that the U.S. added just 266,000 jobs in April, down from 770,000 in March and well below the Reuters consensus forecast of 978,000. The official unemployment rate ticked up to 6.1% from 6.0% in March. The Dow rose 0.5%, the S&P 0.8%, and the Nasdaq 1.3%. Crude oil traded near $65 per barrel, while gold rose $15 to $1831 per ounce.

Back on April 14, we wrote about the bullish technical outlook for semiconductors, a key Technology industry. At the time, the iShares PHLX Semiconductor (SOXX) and the Van Eck Vectors Semi ETF (SMH) SOXX had just made all-time highs (ATHs). Additionally, nine of 10 major holdings in the SOXX were at or near ATHs.

In recent months, we talked about the potential for a major U.S. Dollar Index (USD) bottom. The greenback was close to major long-term chart support, the COT data was very favorable for the dollar (although this has reversed), and the COT data for the euro (58% of the USD) was very unfavorable. Sentiment toward the dollar was poor and sentiment toward the euro was bullish (this also reversed, with sentiment now neutral). So far, USD has bounced over 4% and has traced out a series of higher highs and higher lows.

The stock market rallied last week, beginning February on a strong note. Tech stocks outperformed blue chips on strong earnings from a handful of megacap technology companies.
