18 insurers file to join Michigan marketplace

18 companies submit plans, file to join Michigan's Health Insurance Marketplace in 2015

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Additional insurers are asking to join Michigan's Health Insurance Marketplace.

The state says Wednesday that it has received filing information from 18 health insurance companies wanting to be included in 2015 — five more than participated last year.

Department of Insurance and Financial Services Director Ann Flood says state residents seeking coverage through the marketplace will have even more plans to choose from and that "increased competition helps keep premiums lower."

Flood's department will submit recommendations for qualified health plans by Aug. 8 to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Nearly 273,000 Michigan residents have selected private insurance plans under the federal health care law, exceeding initial projections by more than 100,000. Figures released a few weeks ago showed 468,000 eligible to enroll.
