7 Ways to Cut Pet Food Costs

Your dog or cat is a part of the family — and you wouldn’t have it any other way. But as any pet owner knows, those furry friends can become uber-expensive in a hurry.

Perhaps that’s the price you pay for love. But you can still get a discount on all that affection by searching around for the best prices on pet food.

From buying in bulk from warehouse clubs to joining free rewards programs, there are many ways to slash pet food costs. Following are seven ways to cut the cost of pet food.

Search for pet food coupons at Coupons.com

Each month, Coupons.com unveils hundreds of dollars in savings on grocery items, personal care items and other goods — including pet supplies.

For example, in April, you could get $10 off any large bag of Wellness dry dog food at Petco (18 to 30 pounds). They also offered many other pet care coupons.

New coupons are unveiled every month. If you need a reminder, simply sign up for the Money Talks News newsletter. We run a feature story when the latest coupons are unveiled, so you won’t have to look any further than your inbox to be alerted to the latest deals.

Join Amazon Subscribe & Save

Amazon has a service called Subscribe & Save that nets you a discount when you set up regularly scheduled deliveries of five or more products each month. Pet supplies are on the list of options.

So, if your pooch has a hankering for Wellness Puppy Bites, you can cut the cost by 15 percent — and get free shipping — if you are signed up for Subscribe & Save.

Join Petco’s Repeat Delivery program

With Petco’s Repeat Delivery program, you can save up to 20 percent on pet food and other supplies. Items also ship free. Finally, as a member of Repeat Delivery, you can earn 5 percent back on each item you order as a member of Petco’s Pals Rewards program.

Enroll in rewards programs

Speaking of rewards programs, many pet food manufacturers offer rewards programs that grant you access to coupons and other promotions that can help you save.

These companies and retailers include:

Check out pet food manufacturer’s websites

If your pet has a favorite food, keep tabs on the food maker’s website. You’ll often find good deals there.

For example, Hill’s Pet Nutrition – the company that makes Science Diet – recently advertised the following coupons:

  • $5 off any size bag or four cans of Prescription Diet pet food

  • Buy two cans, get one can free Science Diet cat food

  • Buy two cans, get one can free Ideal Balance wet canned dog food

Buy in bulk

Millions of people save money by shopping for their family needs – including those of their pets – at warehouse clubs such as Sam’s Club, Costco and BJ’s.

As we noted last year in the story “20 Ways to Save Big Bucks on Pet Supplies“:

(Blogger Kendel) Perez gets rawhides by the 15-pack at Sam’s Club, paying less than $1 apiece — less than half the price at pet stores.

Make your own

If you have the inclination, DIY pet food can save you a bundle. The internet is full of homemade pet-food recipes. But before you try this, consult with your veterinarian to make sure it’s the best choice for your four-legged friend.

WebMD also has some tips — and offers the sobering reminder that some pets may require a diet that is actually a lot more expensive than you might think.
