Do ADENTRA's (TSE:ADEN) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

Investors are often guided by the idea of discovering 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without any revenue, let alone profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like ADENTRA (TSE:ADEN). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide ADENTRA with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

ADENTRA's Improving Profits

In the last three years ADENTRA's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. It's good to see that ADENTRA's EPS has grown from US$4.81 to US$5.73 over twelve months. That's a 19% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. EBIT margins for ADENTRA remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 60% to US$2.6b. That's encouraging news for the company!

Are ADENTRA Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own ADENTRA shares worth a considerable sum. To be specific, they have US$28m worth of shares. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Even though that's only about 5.0% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
