The Affair has finally confirmed what happened to Joshua Jackson's character Cole Lockhart as its fifth season continued in the US last night (September 15).

Viewers have been left wondering about Cole's fate since the final season's premiere, which saw Cole and Alison's (Ruth Wilson) daughter Joanie all grown up and missing her dad, but in the latest episode the mystery over what has happened to Cole in the flashforwards was finally solved.

This week's flashforwards ended with Joanie, now played by True Blood's Anna Paquin, cycling to the Lockhart family burial site, where she greeted her dad's grave.

The tombstone revealed that Cole had died in 2053, making him 74 when he passed away.

Last year it was confirmed that actor Joshua Jackson would not be returning as a series regular in the show's fifth season. The report added that he could return as a guest star in an episode or two, though, so there's still a chance we could see Cole back on screens later in the series.

Jackson's exit followed that of castmate Ruth Wilson, whose character Alison was killed off during season four.

Although the show's main characters all believe Alison died by suicide by drowning, viewers know that Ben (Ramon Rodriguez) threw her against a cabinet in a violent rage, causing Alison to hit her head and fall unconscious. He then carried her to the water and threw her in, where she drowned.

Viewers are still hoping that the truth about Alison's death will be revealed, and with Joanie now back in Montauk and exploring her parents' past, here's hoping Joanie finally gets answers.

Although, considering this week's episode seemed to suggest that Joanie isn't her mother's biggest fan at the moment, maybe that's too much to hope for.

The Affair airs on Showtime in the US. Sky Atlantic airs the show in the UK, and you can catch up on series 1-4 on NOW TV.
