It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the PGT Innovations, Inc. (NYSE:PGTI) share price down 23% in the last month. On the other hand the share price is higher than it was three years ago. In that time, it is up 41%, which isn't bad, but not amazing either.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During three years of share price growth, Innovations achieved compound earnings per share growth of 28% per year. The average annual share price increase of 12% is actually lower than the EPS growth. So one could reasonably conclude that the market has cooled on the stock.

A Different Perspective

Investors in Innovations had a tough year, with a total loss of 24%, against a market gain of about 8.7%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 3.7% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering.
