Update: Intercontinental International Real Estate Investment (ATH:INTERCO) Stock Gained 25% In The Last Year

These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). To wit, the Intercontinental International Real Estate Investment Company (ATH:INTERCO) share price is 25% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around -7.8% (not including dividends) in the same period. That's a solid performance by our standards! Note that businesses generally develop over the long term, so it the returns over the last year might not reflect a long term trend.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last year Intercontinental International Real Estate Investment grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 231%. This EPS growth is significantly higher than the 25% increase in the share price. So it seems like the market has cooled on Intercontinental International Real Estate Investment, despite the growth. Interesting. The caution is also evident in the lowish P/E ratio of 7.56.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Intercontinental International Real Estate Investment's TSR for the last year was 32%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective
