The successful rescue of all 12 members of a soccer team and their coach in Thailand from a flooded cave has gripped the world — Melania Trump included.

The first lady, who has just left for Europe for a weeklong trip with President Trump, used part of her flight to tweet a message celebrating Tuesday’s news that the boys were safe. FLOTUS called it “an amazing and heroic global effort.”

While her tweet echoed the sentiments of countless people around the globe, critics couldn’t resist accusing Trump of hypocrisy in light of her husband’s controversial family separation policy. The Trump administration is expected to miss its Tuesday deadline of reuniting more than 100 children under the age of 5 with their parents after they were separated and detained at the border.

Through her spokeswoman, the first lady has expressed her opposition to seeing “children separated from their families” and has made two visits to detention centers. However, this has not pacified her many critics in the firestorm that followed her appearance wearing a Zara jacket bearing the slogan “I really don’t care, do u?” en route to a detention center in June.

Critics aren’t exactly buying her eagerness to celebrate the return of the 12 boys in Thailand to their parents, given that 2,000 migrant children have been separated from their families under POTUS’s watch.

Trump supporters have fired back at the criticism, defending both the first lady and the divisive immigration policy.
