Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume is very strong today with more than 10 million contracts already trading so far, dominated by the leading indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

More than 1.8 million options have traded in the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY), with 1 million puts. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 498,000, led by 355,000 puts.

The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has 427,000 contracts changing hands, with 360,000 puts leading that volume. Following is the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) at 398,000 options, with 251,000 puts.

The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has seen 343,000 options turn over, with calls outpacing puts by more than 2 to 1. Following is the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) at 302,000, evenly split between calls and puts.

Just behind is the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) at 288,000, with 160,000 puts. The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) has volume of 191,000, with 162,000 puts.
