NewsBreak- Chile Cancels APEC Due to Ongoing Protests

Investing.com - The Chilean government announced on Wednesday that it is canceling the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation next month.

Some 20 people have died so far and thousands have been injured in over a week of protests against the rising cost of living and perceived chronic misrule and corruption.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping were expected to meet on the sidelines of the meeting and possibly sign their much-hyped 'phase-1' agreement on trade that is supposed to dial down tensions between the world's two largest economies. Details of where or if a meeting between the two to sign a deal will occur now remain uncertain.

The U.S. dollar index, which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six major currencies, was unchanged at 97.488. However, the dollar extended its recent gains against the Chilean peso, rising 1.4% to a new 16-year high of 739.33, before retracing to 737.22 by 10:45 AM ET.
