Nokia, Motorola to unveil new gadgets at NY events, ahead of new iPhone from Apple

NEW YORK (AP) -- Nokia and Motorola are set to show off new devices at separate events in New York on Wednesday.

The announcements will come just before Apple is expected to unveil a new iPhone. Apple Inc. has an event next week in San Francisco.

Apple dominates the market for tablet computers. Its iPads account for more than two-thirds of tablets shipped in the second quarter. Samsung surpassed Apple in smartphones this year, but sales of the iPhone are still strong. Apple is expected to get another boost with the iPhone 5, which is likely to start selling later this month.

Nokia Corp. is trying to challenge Apple and makers of phones running Google's Android system. It is backing a new Windows Phone system made by Microsoft Corp. Nokia is expected to unveil new devices under its Lumia brand at a morning event.

In the afternoon, Motorola Mobility will hold its own event. It's not known what it will announce — it could be a new Android phone or a tablet. Either way, it's the first major product announcement since it was bought by Google Inc. for $12.4 billion in May.
