Peppa Pig voice actor Morwenna Banks thought the show would flop

It’s the children’s TV show that has haunted every parent’s home for over a decade, but voice actress Morwenna Banks has admitted that when she took on the role of Mummy Pig in Peppa Pig, she thought that the show would be a flop.

Morwenna, 55, has been playing the matriarch of our favourite pig family since the show first hit our screens back in 2004, and she honestly can’t believe the overwhelming success that it has had.

Speaking to Phillip Schofield and Sarah Greene on This Morning, the star explained: “They came up with the idea of ‘Peppa Pig‘ and they showed me a picture of her and said, ‘Would you do some voices for this animation?’

“They showed me a picture of Peppa and I thought, ‘That is never going to work. Who’s going to go for that? It’s a pig in a dress!'”

However, much like the world, Morwenna has now been charmed by Peppa and her friends, continuing: “I think there is something really special about this, I do think the key is initially in the design.

Morwenna appeared on This Morning alongside 15-year-old Harley.

“There is something incredibly relateable and beautiful about it, and also in the writing – Neville and Mark who write all the scripts are proper [sic] funny.

“They really mean it and they’re really genuine so it comes from a very true place – it’s not written by a committee, which so much children’s television is because people are so afraid of expressing anything, but Mark and Neville knew what they wanted to say, they said it and it really worked.”

Harley hopes to voice Peppa for as long as possible.

Morwenna was joined on This Morning by Harley Bird, 15, who has played the famous voice of Peppa since she was five years old.

Despite being 11 years older than Peppa now, Harley admitted that she is able to switch between her and the cartoon character’s voice with total ease, and she hopes to continue voicing the much-loved pig for as long as possible.
