From Town & Country

Even just by stepping foot in Israel, Prince William has made history. This afternoon, when his plane touched down at Israel Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, the Duke of Cambridge became the first senior member of the British royal family to make an official visit to the country since its founding in 1948.

While in Israel, William will visit Yad Vashem, Israel's official memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Accompanied by the British Chief Rabbi, William will lay a wreath in the Hall of Remembrance in honor of those who died. He also has meetings planned with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli President Reuven Rivlin.

According to Kensington Palace, William is making the trip "at the request of Her Majesty’s Government," and over the course of the tour of Israel, he will also visit the city of Jaffa.

The official royal visit is part of a larger tour of the Middle East for Prince William. Over the weekend, he traveled to Jordan, where he spent time with Crown Prince Al-Hussein Bin Abdullah II, visited with young entrepreneurs, met with students at Al-Hussein Technical University, and attended a celebration for the Queen's birthday.

Later this week, he will travel to the Occupied Palestinian Territories, where he will visit to the Church of St Mary Magdalene, where his great-grandmother Princess Alice is buried.

According to Kensington Palace, several other events and appearances will take place over the course of the Middle Eastern tour, but they have yet to be announced. Generally speaking, William, will meet with "senior political and religious leaders in all three places [Jordan, Israel, and the Occupied Palestinian Territories], as well as a wide range of people drawn from across business, civil society, the arts and media and other sectors at receptions organised by the UK’s three missions."
