RADNOR, Pa. (AP) _ Safeguard Scientifics Inc. (SFE) on Thursday reported first-quarter net income of $21.7 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Radnor, Pennsylvania-based company said it had profit of $1.05.

Safeguard Scientifics shares have risen 32% since the beginning of the year. The stock has declined 15% in the last 12 months.
