Despite her recent break-up with boyfriend Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez has donned her glad rags to celebrate WE Day California in Los Angeles, an event that honours young members of the community that are making a difference in the world.

During her appearance at the event, the 25-year-old was joined onstage by Nellie Mainor, a young fan who, like the singer, has undergone her own serious health battles.

‘Last year I had a kidney transplant and it was weird,’ Gomez shared with the audience. ‘It was weird but hard.’

Nellie, who suffers from a rare kidney disease, was then introduced onto the stage by the singer, who last year underwent a kidney transplant.

‘Do you know how much I've admired you these past couple of days?" Selena asked the little girl before giving her a hug. ‘Hold my hand. I'm needy!’ the Texan-born star joked with new new BFF.

Gomez shared several photos from WE Day, including one with Nellie. She captioned the adorable snap of the pair lying down on the stage: ‘They have such a force of young people that are doing so much for their communities and the world. This is Nellie.

'She's fearless and is wanting to spread awareness about kidney disease.’

In the evening, the singer changed into a black v-neck midi dress with tan suede heels from Jacquemus for a red carpet appearance at the Forum, attended by the likes of Gomez’s other friend Jennifer Aniston, Will Ferrell and Nicole Richie.

The star’s appearance comes amid news she wrote about the United We Dream (a nonprofit organisation to support immigrants) founder Cristina Jiménez for Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2018 issue.

Gomez penned Cristina's entry on the list, paying tribute to her activism and showing her support for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme, which protected thousands of young undocumented immigrants to the U.S. from being deported until President Trump made the official order to reverse it last autumn.

‘Cristina Jiménez dreams,' Selena wrote. 'She dreams big. She dreams because she wants there to be a future for the roughly 700,000 young people who, by no choice of their own, were brought to the U.S. as children by their undocumented immigrant parents. She dreams because she wants the fear and anxiety of the unknown to end.'

Selena continued: ‘As a nation of immigrants, the country is filled with those who believe in the American Dream: the ideal that everyone should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work and determination. Cristina Jiménez is the American Dream.’

We love Selena giving back to others, don't you?
